Vanilla Wars

Rules

This variant is played with standard Magic: the Gathering rules with the following exceptions:

  • All enchant creature spells may be cast as instants during any phase other than the combat phase.

Deck Construction

For this variant all creatures in your deck must be a “Vanilla” creature. A “Vanilla” creature is a creature that has no abilities. In its text box there should only be flavor text. Your deck must also have at least 25% creatures. So in a 60-card deck you should have at least 15 creatures. For this variant all Magic sets are legal for your creatures. This includes Portal, Starter, and Portal Three Kingdoms.

Sideboard

You may have a 15-card sideboard for this variant.

Banned & Restricted List

When playing this variant it is usually decided what Type you will be playing. So, if you are playing Type 1, Type 1.5, Type 2, or Extended Vanilla Wars then, follow that format’s Banned and Restricted List.

Errata

Use the following errata when playing this variant:

All creature gain the following:
  • “As long as ~this~ is enchanted, it has '~This~ may not be the target of spells or abilities.' If ~This~ attacks, it loses '~This~ may not be the target of spells or abilities.' until the end of the turn.”

Mulligan Rules

Standard “Paris” Mulligan is used for this variant.

Before each game begins, a player may, for any reason, reshuffle and redraw his hand, drawing one less card. This may be repeated as often as the player wishes, until he has no cards left in his hand. After the participant, who plays first, mulligans as often as he likes, the decision of whether to mulligan passes to the other player. Once a player passes the opportunity to mulligan, that player may not change his mind.

In addition to a normal mulligan you may take one free mulligan if you do not have any creature cards in your hand. You must show your opponent your hand to take this mulligan. You may only take this mulligan if you have not taken a “Paris” mulligan.
