Mental
Magic
Rules
This
variant is for players who have a great memory of Magic cards and want a
challenge. The game is played of shared decks. One of the decks has random
magic cards with no basic land. This deck is called “tank.” The other deck is nothing but basic land. This is
called “the land deck”. To start the game each play draws 7 cards from
the tank. The person who is playing first draws a card from the tank and
then takes a land from the land deck and puts it into play. He may not put
the card drawn from the land deck into his hand. From there he may play
any card from his hand with the following exceptions:
-
No
cards in the game my be played as what is printed on them. When you
cast it you must name another card with the same casting cost and the
card becomes that spell. For example I am holding a Raging
Goblin in my hand. It has a casting cost of “ ”.
I may cast that spell as a Lightning
Bolt or Jackal
Pup. Even though the spell started as a creature card does
not mean that you have to cast it as one.
-
Once
either player has cast a spell, you may not use that spell again for
the remainder of the game. The only exception to this rule is if for
some reason the graveyard gets shuffled back into the tank. If this
happens then you may cast any spell that is not in play when the
graveyards get shuffled.
-
Any
card that lets you tutor (Demonic
Tutor, Worldly
Tutor) may only be used to get a card with the same type
(creature, instant, sorcery, or enchantment) printed on it. So if you
cast Vampiric
Tutor using a Dark
Ritual card then you could only search for an instant from
the tank.
-
You
may not use any targeted land destruction spell. Global land
destruction can be used.
-
When
the card drawn from the tank is a non-basic land the player skips
putting a land into play from the land deck. He instead puts the
non-basic land into play and names a non-basic land of his choice.
This is the only land that can be targeted by land destruction.
-
Each
player may tap any of the basic lands he has in play for any color
mana. The lands they have in play from the land deck do not count as
basic lands or non-basic lands. Nor are they affected by spells and
abilities that target them. They are just lands. So land walking
abilities do not work. For example Karma
would do nothing because no player has a “swamp” in play.
-
Any
player may skip playing spells on his turn to discard a card and draw
an extra card.
Deck
Construction
Generally
speaking, you could pick up any stack of magic cards and basic lands and
play this variant. It is best to construct your own “Tank Deck” so you
don’t get any weird casting costs showing up. Be sure to include a few
non-basic lands in your tank deck.
Sideboard
There
is no sideboard for this variant.
Mulligan
Rules
You
may not take a mulligan in this variant.
