The village of Vorizia is a fairly large village in the south of the Heraklion district on the route of Agia Varvara - Zaros - Vorizia - Platanos - Apodoulou - Agia Galini. It is quite large and has about 600 inhabitants. The village is situated at an altitude of 525 meters. Most of the inhabitants live from the olive cultivation and of livestock (sheep). During the Second World War the village was completely bombarded by the Germans as retaliation, as the local partisans had helped the resistance.
At the entrance of the village a large war memorial was erected to commemorate this fact.
Just before the village on the west side you find the exit to the Varsamonero monastery and the Agios Phanourios church. On the route here you will pass the village's cemetery where there are a number of churches. Two of them are old and picturesque. Both churches have large cracks that have been formed in the course of time by, among other things, earthquakes. The white church is probably closed for this reason.
East of the village is the beginning of the Vorizia gorge that runs to Kamares village and the Kamares cave. The walk takes about three and a half hours to four hours and is very difficult.
