The village of Akoumia is 39km south of Rethimnon on the Rethimnon - Spili - Akoumia - Agia Galini road, and it has Byzantine churches. It's only a small village along an interesting road, and in the valley below in between the olive trees and the green bushes there is a striking and pretty church. In Akoumia you will find the road to the delightful beach of Triopetra. People on their way to Triopetra Beach will have to drive through the village in order to get there.
Akoumia is an authentic Cretan village and the people here are really friendly. In the main square with its terraces you find the large church behind an almost even bigger tree. Nearby is the mini market of the village. The very good bakery is in the beginning, at the turn where you exit the main road to go to the village. More taverns can be found in other parts of the village. There are another three nice churches in the village, and one of them is the most special. It is the 14th-century Sotiras Christos church where you can see well-preserved frescoes. The church is indicated by arrows and you have to do a bit of searching to find it. From one of the "main roads" you will run into the last arrow pointing into a narrow side street. This street with its small and white washed stone houses reminded me of some of the capitals that you can sometimes see on the Cycladic islands. You than have to walk through the whole street with old houses and flowers (about 100 meter). At the end of the street you will see the Sotiras Christos church on the right hand side.
