There are three churches, a Venetian tower (in the north of the village) and two small tavernas that are open in the summer months. The most remarkable church is the Byzantine Kato Panagia and Agios Nikolaos Church which includes murals and an ancient tomb (this church is unfortunately not on the photos, it is slightly lower in the village). The large yellow painted church is the All Saints church or Agioi Pantes church and it dates back to 1873. It houses icons from the 15th to the 20th century that come from other churches in the area. Two particular interesting icons date from around 1400. In the village several old houses have been restored which are now offered as a holiday home. The village of Anatoli was a centre of resistance against the Turks during the Turkish occupation of the island of Crete. The monument of a resistance fighter you see on the square bears witness to this. For all apartments, holiday houses, studio's and hotels in Anatoli on Crete - click here. |
