The village of Avdou is 39km southeast of the capitol of Heraklion on the road from Chersonisos to the Lassithi Plateau (with its windmills). There are six Byzantine churches in this village. Although we read that they would probably all be locked, someone in the village square may have the keys or know where to find them. Avdou is a very charming and authentic old village, filled with old buildings. There are a couple of taverns and kafenions and there is a bakery. In the nearby village of Gonies you also find a couple of gas stations. We visited the 14th century Agios Antonios Church in the north of the village of Avdou (which happened to be open). On the outside it doesn't look like much, but on the inside its walls are covered with beautiful wall paintings.
