The village of Papagiannades is situated in the east of the island of Crete, along the highway that runs between Sitia and Makrigialos. It is a traditional village with many stone houses, bougainvillas and flowers and it is surrounded by olive groves. Here it is an agricultural area and Papagiannades has a population of about 150 people. The distance to Sitia is 19 kilometer. On a hill just before the village are the remains of a Minoan city (Monastiraki, north of the village). Papagiannades has a few nice churches including the Church of the Virgin Mary and the Church of Panagia Eleousa with 14th century frescoes. The latter church looks like two churches side by side with two doors and a small bell tower in the middle between the two houses. It is situated on the other side of the road just north of the village.
