The village of Avdou on Crete

The village of Avdou is 39km southeast of Iraklion on the road from Chersonisos to the Lassithi Plateau (with its windmills). There are six Byzantine churches in this village. Although they are all locked, someone in the village square may have the keys or know where to find them. Avdou is a very charming and authentic old village, filled with old buildings. We visited the 14th century Agios Antonios Church in the north of the village (which happened to be open). On the outside it doesn't look like much, but on the inside its walls are covered with beautiful wallpaintings.
