Juniper oil is extracted from Juniperus communis from the Cupressaceae family. It is also called common juniper.

 

Precautions

 

Non-toxic but since it can stimulate the uterine muscle it should not be used during pregnancy, nor should it be used by people with kidney problems. Generally non-sensitizing, still some people react to is. Use this oil moderately.

 

Therapeutic Properties

 

The therapeutic properties of Juniper essential oil include antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, astringent, carminative, depurative, diuretic, emmenagogue and tonic.

 

Uses

 

Juniper essential oil can calm the nerves, relieve anxiety, nervous tension and mental exhaustion. It is useful with relieving urine when the prostate is enlarged as well as with cystitis, inability to urinate or pass kidney stones.

It is useful for cellulite, water retension, digestive complaints, over-indulgence of food and premenstrual bloating. It helps regulate menstruation and eases painful periods.

Juniper essential oil assists in eliminating uric acid and alleviates the pain suffered from gout, arthritis, and rheumatism. It acts as a tonic for the liver, is useful for acne, eczema, oily skin, psoriasis and dandruff.

Juniper oil makes a good insect repellent.
