Description

Calamus oil is extracted from Acorus calamus var. angustatus from the Araceae family.

Origin Of Calamus Oil

Calamus is a perennial, semi-aquatic, marshy plant native to northern Europe and Asia. The root of this plant is used in herbal medicine for the treatment of nervous complaints, vertigo, headaches and dysentery.

The essential oil contains asorone, which is a carcinogenic, and oral ingestion can cause convulsions and liver &/or kidney damage.

When fed to rats at an inclusion rate of 0.05 - 0.5% in their daily diet, calamus oil caused malignant tumors to develop in the duodenum after 59 weeks. Severe tremors occurred lasting from 30 minutes to 2 hours when calamus oil was orally ingested.
