Once established, the Storm Phoenixes started designing their own Mechs
rather than building old Inner Sphere designs, but this practice did not
last very long. After the discovery of the Clans, and the subsequent
raiding, individual Houses began using the new technology to build new
BattleMechs, mostly to make the raiding easier. A few designs were
given to the central military, which then decided to restart its own BattleMech
program.
Due to the Combine's small size, while it has a lot of Mech designs, relatively
few of most exist. This gives the Phoenixes the advantage of surprise
in most situations, since a design seen in one Phoenix attack may easily
never be seen again. The large number of Storm Phoenix designs can
also be attributed to the directions their original research went--while
the Clans were working on weapons efficiency, the Combine had concentrated
on new, faster production techniques.
