Overview:
The Squall was the first Storm Phoenix Mech to be designed after the Combine's
formation, and its impressive raiding record ensured that it saw a reasonable
amount of action even after Clan technology became avaliable. When House
Wakareji wanted to design a light, efficient, long-range Mech, rather than
make a totally new design, they chose to take the Squall and refit it with
new technology.
Capabilities:
Relatively slow for a 30-ton Mech, the Squall's first priority was speed.
The engine was changed to an XL engine, and the Squall's speed increased
to reach nearly 120 kph. The PPC was removed and replaced with a Clan technology
extended-range version. To handle the ER PPC's heat, the Squall's heat
sinks were changed to double-strength models. Jump jets were added, giving
the new Squall a jump range of 210 meters. If it fires its PPC and
jumps full distance at the same time, the refitted Squall will slightly
overtax its heat sinks, but designers considered this acceptable.
Deployment:
The Squall became the standard light Mech for House Wakareji, but never
really caught on in other Houses. House Naraku still fields the design,
mostly in the New Tokyo Striker Regiment.
Other Notes:
Lacking knowledge of the proper name, the Clans refer to the Squall as
the Racer. The existance of the Squall has effectively stopped any
attempt by the Storm Phoenixes to acquire the Wolf in Exile Pack Hunter
design, but this was hardly intentional.
