Overview:
Affectionately referred to as the "hanger that jumps" by Storm Phoenix
aerospace pilots, the Fushichou required a designation all its own when
it was released from Phoenix Shipyards in early 3061. Storm Phoenix
leadership wanted a vessel that could carry an unprecedented amount of
aerospace fighters, as well as a large amount of dropships. Heavy
armor was a necessity, and the ability to overtake and outmanuever smaller
ships was added as a primary goal by the Phoenix design team. (They
claimed to be following orders, but it later became known that Suta-shu
Kuririn Mizuno, who commissioned the Fushichou project, had said nothing
about intended acceleration rate. Mamoru Shinwa, head of Phoenix
Shipyards, admitted that they'd simply wanted to prove it was possible
to make a battleship as fast as a destroyer.)
The pride of the Storm Phoenix armada, the Fuschichou's two fighter bays
can carry a total of 175 fighters, enough to make anyone think twice about
engaging. The ship is covered with all the armor its hull can stand,
providing excellent defense, which is imperative--the Fushichou's point-defense
weaponry is rather lacking. (The fighters which the ship carries
with it were considered sufficient fighter defense.) The design of
the Fushichou's Dropship docking bays is unique, they are inside the ship
and when no Dropship is docking or detaching, heavy doors close over the
docking points to prevent damage to them. The drawback of this system,
of course, is the extra time needed to open the doors slows the process
significantly, which can be a great disadvantage in battle situations.
The Fushichou must understandably sacrifice weaponry for all its advantages.
Designers packed on a few massive weapons, rather than several lighter
ones, in an attempt to minimize the amount of gunners who would need to
be trained for duty aboard the ship. Gunners aboard a Fushichou must
be careful to make every shot count, but the reliance on energy weapons
reduces this stress a bit. The Fushichou is every ton an assault
ship, and its first trip into Clan space should prove devestating to the
Clans.
