Overview:
Displeased with the performance of most Warships captured from the Clans, the Storm Phoenix Combine set its Electra Shipyards to work on building a new Warship which would better serve the Combine.  Originally designated the Thunderbird, the ship was meant to be 250,000 tons, more or less a raider.  The first prototype, the SPCS Akujin, was launched a good ten years after the project began.  Two years later, however, the Akujin was destroyed by stress problems.  The jump sail was torn clean off, the bridge split right down the middle, one outward-jutting fighter bay nearly fell off as well, and Electra Shipyards was thoroughly embarassed.  The Combine, however, was determined to continue work.
The weight specification for the Thunderbird was tripled when no quick solution to the stress problems could be found. Work progressed slowly until the Storm Phoenix alliance with Clan Ice Hellion.  The Ice Hellions assisted Combine scientists in completing the ship, a deal which gained the Hellions two new aerospace fighter designs.  The class was renamed after the Thunderbird's tragic connotations and within two years the first Miami-class ship, the SPCS Ketsurui, was fully constructed and launched into orbit around Sahara.
The Miami is considered a jack of all trades, and master of a few.  Heavy armor and excellent acceleration see it through most situations, and it can put up a respectable fight when cornered.  The Miami has five dropship docking points, and carries 40 fighters, further increasing the firepower at its command.  However, it is not seen as an attack vessel by most Storm Phoenix naval commanders, and it is unlikely any Miamis produced will be used extensively in this role.  Production orders suggest that the existing Storm Phoenix defense ships may be phased out in favor of the Miami.
