Overview:
The Carillon has been the mainstay of Storm Phoenix forces since its introduction,
and is one of the oldest Mechs the Combine fields. Developed immediately
after the Loose Cannon, the Carillon has repeatedly proven itself a deadly
design. The recent development of the Colubrid, however, has pushed
the Carillon into a secondary role. Rather than convert their Carillon
factories to produce other Mechs, Houses Brush, Ryan, Hideyoshi, and Hashiba
chose to modify the existing Carillon. The old Carillon units were redesignated
the SPC-X Carillon, more often simply referred to as the Carillon-X.
Capabilities:
The chassis of the Carillon-X is heavily armored for its weight and extremely
manueverable, however, to obtain this unsurpassed agility, armor over the
Mech's leg actuators is thin and easily penetrated by a solid hit.
The Carillon-X's base chassis carries two jump jets, though more can be
easily added.
The primary Carillon-X carries a large pulse laser in the right arm for
accurate, long-range firepower. A trio of extended-range medium lasers
backs up the weapon. All of the primary configuration's lasers are
linked to a targeting computer.
The most common alternate configuration, the A variant, carries an extended-range
PPC in the right arm, with a medium pulse laser in the right-side nose
mount. The left arm carries a quartet of machine guns and a small
SRM pack for close range skirmishes. This configuration also carries
extra jump jets, for a total jump distance of 180 meters.
The B variant is meant for scouting, carrying an active probe and ECM suite
in the left torso. A light Ultra autocannon in the right arm and
an assortment of lasers make up the Mech's defense if it is discovered.
A fire-support Mech in the purest sense, the C configuration carries a
large laser and three LRM racks to soften up enemies at a distance.
Each LRM rack has a small pulse laser mounted next to it, if close range
firepower is needed. The C configuration carries two extra jump jets,
giving it a jump range of 120 meters.
Like the C configuration, the D variant is used for fire support. The right
arm carries both a heavy and medium LRM rack, with an acceptable amount
of ammunition. An extended-range medium laser in the nose mount and three
small lasers in the left arm provide backup for the missiles.
Deployment:
The Carillon-X is still found in nearly every unit of the Storm Phoenix
Combine, most numerous in the Daidri and Cataract Sweeper Regiments. However,
between the fact that it is no longer being produced and its workhorse
role, its numbers are expected to decline sharply in the next few years.
Other Notes
Lacking knowledge of the correct name, the Clans refer to the Carillon
and Carillon-X as the Black Eagle. (The Clans also refer to the Combine
as the Black Eagles due to their insignia, and the Carillon and Carillon-X
have apparently come to symbolize the faction.)
