Overview:
House Brush has never been known for heavy Mechs, and House Ryan's Denizen
was not designed for slugging matches. Their common plight and history
of close cooperation sparked work on the Toxicant, an assault OmniMech
designed for brutal, straight-up battles. The project was delayed
several times, most often by the acquisition of new technology which the
designers wanted to incorporate, and by the time the Toxicant was nearly
finished, the first Hades Fox OmniMech had just walked out of its new factory
on Shadow. With their first look at the new Omni, designers were
surprised to see a resemblance between the two Mechs, most notably their
domed cockpits and triangular arm structure. The Toxicant was held
up yet again, this time for the resemblance to it smaller cousin to be
improved, and the rechristened Hellfox finally began production several
months later.
Capabilities:
As aerospace-specialist Houses, and with their strong secondary emphasis
on light Mechs, the designers of the Hellfox chose manueverability as a
primary concern. The Hellfox moves quickly for its size, and special
pods were added for jump jets, which several variants utilize.
The primary Hellfox strikes at all ranges. Two extended-range lasers
at the ends of the arms and a pair of light autocannon underslung nearer
the torso make up its long-range power, while closer in it can utilize
the quartet of pulse lasers in the complex nose mount. A pair of
SRM systems--mounted in the unusually-placed weapons pods just above the
Hellfox's kneecaps--round out the armament.
The A variant, one of the less common configurations, is geared towards
long-range. The arms carry large pulse lasers, and the nose mount
holds a pair of light autocannon. Each leg pod carries a pair of
small pulse lasers for short-range work. An interesting feature of
the A configuration are the rear-facing SRMs on the arms, which discourage
attacks from behind.
The B variant is a devestating close range machine, featuring a targeting
computer. Small LRM packs in the legs can soften up targets, but
the configuration's main weapons are the pair of heavy autocannon in the
underslung arm mounts. Four extended-range lasers are set in the
nose, and the outer arm pods remain empty in this configuration.
The electronics package of the B variant includes an ECM suite and an active
probe, making it suitable as a heavy scout though it is rarely used in
this role.
Work on the C configuration held up the design process for a bit while
the Combine raided for Streak LRM technology. Four small SLRM launchers
are placed in the nose mount, while standard LRM launchers are in the kneecap
pods, much like the B configuration. The outer arm mounts each carry
an extended-range PPC. This variant is a support Mech through and
through.
Two deadly gauss rifles in the underarm mounts make the D configuration
a favorite among pilots, despite its reliance on ammunition-based weapons.
Large SRM racks in the legs give close-range firepower, but when ammo is
depleted, the D's only backup weapons are the four small lasers in the
nose.
Deployment:
House Brush and House Ryan both possess Hellfoxes, mostly in their Sweeper
Regiments. One is also in the Falcon Guards, as House Ryan's Tai-sho pilots
a unique configuration. The SPCM has the designs for the Hellfox,
but none have been constructed as of yet.
Other notes:
Lacking knowledge of the correct names, the Clans refer to the Hellfox
as the Rampager.
