I'm getting my Christmas Spirit back.

It's been gone for two decades and recognizing why it was gone helped me find it again. Which is amazing for an old single guy not named Scrooge.

My Christmases have gone in roughly 20-year cycles. The first 20 years was the childhood Christmas, glowing now in misty memories like one of those videotape Hallmark holiday specials. Grandparents house. Family. That tree. Those rooms. That flow. That was the 60's and 70's.

And then the older generation died. Literally. And the scene shifted to my parents house. The rooms changed. The people changed. No longer just family, our holiday no reached out to family. Boy and girlfriends. High school, college and business associates. Neighbors. That was the 80's and 90's.

Then came marriages and grandchildren. One would think that would strengthen the pull of Christmas joy. But it didn't for me. In over two dozen years of gift giving I rarely made my wife happy. Money was tight. My judgment was awful. It was Shane Falco quicksand. The worse it got the more I struggled and that meant the worse it got. Family obligations were just that: obligations, not joyful opportunities. That was the 00's and the 10's.

But now we enter a new age. Divorced. Living alone. Parents aging. Neighborhood drop ins are dwindling. The children are grown and bringing their own boy/girlfriends/spouses – and dogs. Money is …. OK. Nobody has any gift expectations. Hell if I get em ANYTHING they're surprised and pleased. How many more of these will we have at mom and dads? Three? Two? And after that, what? I'm not going to pick up the traces and pull the wagon. My sister will try but it won't be the same. The continuity won't be there. It won't be a flow but forced.

So I've already decided that, health and finances allowing, when my parents pass, I will spend my holidays volunteering. Secret Santa. Serving meals. Visiting hospitals. Trying to lighten the load of others. And all of this came to me this morning on the way to school while listening to Bing sing White Christmas, as it should be.
