Marginalism and the Higher Ed Paradox.

My hypothesis is that it is precisely the dumbing down of U.S. education over the last decades that explains the increase in willingness to pay for education. The mechanism is diminishing marginal returns to education.

Typical graduate business school education has indeed become less rigorous over time, as has typical college education. But typical high school education has declined in quality just as much. As a result, the human capital difference between a college and high-school graduate has increased, because the first increments of education are more valuable on the job market than the later ones. It used to be that everybody could read and understand something like Orwell’s Animal Farm, but the typical college graduates could also understand Milton or Spencer. Now, nobody grasps Milton but only the college grads can process Animal Farm, and for employers the See Spot Run–>Animal Farm jump is more valuable than the Animal Farm–>Milton jump.

So the value of a college education has increased even as its rigor has declined, because willingness to pay for quality is really willingness to pay for incremental quality.

I don't recommend movies very often although I frequently give my opinion.  Was in the COMPLETELY wrong frame of mind to watch "The Way" - and it took my breath away.  Emilio Estevez was away from the big screen directors chair for 6 years.  I LOVED his effort then (Bobby) and love this one as well.

For reasons best left undiscussed I found myself trapped in Gahanna and decided to watch a bit of their parade today.  After 10-15 minutes of odds and ends there came a dozen or so Obama supporters.  As they strode along they were chanting "What do we want?   Four more years!  What do we have?  Spirit!"

I noticed they weren't getting much response from the parade watchers in my area so I thought I'd help.  I started my own chant. "What do we want? JOBS?  When do we want em? NOW!" at first only 5 or 6 joined my mild protest but once the Obamaniacs got in front of us our numbers swelled to about three dozen, drowning out the marchers.   

They moved on down the route.  We had a smattering of applause, then returned to the patriotic displays from Miss Janine's House of Tap and the Little Ninja's Tae Kwan Doh Academy.

oft heard at Christmas time, it fits here too.  I'm zonked from the 24 hours behind the wheel followed by four final exams.  No rest tomorrow ... then Thursday I fly to Nevada to bring a car back - 30 MORE hours behind the wheel.  Maybe Sunday?

Until then, there's this.  This marks the second year I've been teaching an intro ethics course over the 4th.  Asignment:  Read the Bill f Rights and rewrite the one you like the least.  Creative thought ... an exercise in persuasive writing.  Nothing major.

One of my students (from Ghana) emailed her assignment to me Monday.  She begins "I don't want to change any of the Bill of Rights I believe that these were put into action for the way they were intended to  be I think that that all  of the Bill of Rights are just fine the way they are."

Great podcast from theDed Soc re: right to work.  OTR did 4 Ray Bs stories.  Nothing else of not ystdy.  I've schleped all of my ACA reading into one folder.  It's over 200 posts at this point.  These aren't one liners  - they're lengthy analysis and observation.  Will take a few days to sift through, but I'll get there.

Obama isn't a Muslim.  Remember, he sat in Rev. Wright's church for 20 years.  Although he didn't hear anything.  But he's no Muslim.  I don't see how anyone could question his religeous views ... unless it's perhaps
