1. Janet: During your career there have been two major bubbles. If you knew about them, and I assume you did because you’re one of the top economists, why didn’t you do anything to stop them?

2. Janet: Are you in favor of transparency (and I don’t mean Obama’s definition) or continued Fed secrecy?

3. Janet: Will you support a full and complete audit of the Fed (including Ft. Knox) and, if not, will you explain why the American people can’t be told the real truth as to what is going on?

4. Janet: Considering how large our debts have grown, can you explain how it is possible to exit the current quantitative easing program without crushing the stock and bond markets?

5. Janet: How is the American public safer if the “too big to fail" banks are even bigger after these last five years?

6. Janet: Would you explain what will happen to the economy and the federal budget deficit if rates move up to where they were in 2006, before the crisis?

7. Janet: Can you explain to the people of our fine country how large the derivative exposure is to the American taxpayer?

When King Edward VII died in 1910. former President Roosevelt happened to be in England and was invited to attend the funeral. It was a huge pageant and procession, which was governed by ancient medieval rules.

The various presidents of republics, having no titles of nobility, were assigned to march behind the Emperors, Kings, Dukes, and Barons.

The President of France found it unreasonable that he had to follow a bunch of titled nobodies, and told Roosevelt so.

CHARLIE MARTIN: The End of Poverty in America: Figures don’t lie.

According to a Cato Institute study published last year, the combined expenditures for Federal and state governments directed to means-tested public assistance — “welfare” — is approximately $1 trillion (yes, with a “T”) a year.

There are approximately 48 million people in the US with incomes at the poverty level or below.

The application of advanced mathematics — long division, and I did it in my head thank you very much — tells us that’s about $21,000 per person per year. Obviously, that’s $84,000 for a family of four.

That’s got a problem, though. According to the 2013 Federal Poverty Guidelines, the poverty level for a family of four is $23,950. The total of $84,000 is roughly 380 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

Obviously, there’s no poverty left in America.

Unless, of course, that money isn’t actually being spent on the poor people at all. I wonder where it goes?

Muzzling of federal scientists widespread, survey suggests. “Twenty four per cent of respondents said they ‘sometimes’ or ‘often’ were asked to exclude or alter technical information in federal government documents for non-scientific reasons. Most often, the request came from their direct supervisors, followed by business or industry, other government departments, politically appointed staff and public interest advocates.”

Luckily, this is in Canada. I’m sure nothing like this could happen in our federal government.

I survived Thanksgiving but it was a numbers game.  Elphs outnumber Donks around my families table 9-1.  Christmas is a different story.  There will be up to three gatherings.  One will enjoy the 9-1 advantage.  One will be closer to 3-2 and in one I'll face a 2-1 disadvantage.  So Obama's Thanksgiving "tell your uncle how great Obamacare is" putsch may become relevant.

The exhibition informs visitors that the project “did not gain popular acceptance.” Amazingly enough, people didn’t want to turn their family holidays into socialist celebrations.

Here at home, this Thanksgiving brings an effort by the Obama administration to turn a day of giving thanks into a day of discussion about the virtues of national health care. On Wednesday afternoon, just hours before Thanksgiving, President Obama’s Twitter account — which has more than 40 million followers — sent out this message: “Make sure everyone who sits down with you for #Thanksgivukkah dinner is covered.” (“Thanksgivukkah” refers to this year’s rare overlap of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah.)

The president’s tweet linked to a photo of a young man sitting at a table with a turkey and a menorah. The accompanying text: “Celebrating Thanksgiving. Lighting the Hanukkah candles. Talking about health insurance. Gotta love dinners like these.”
