30 Days of Halloween - day 18
Now Playing: Lie to Me

One of my least favorite.  Probably won't make the list next year, depending on comments and your input.  The Shining.

Creepy old house?  Sure.  Hot chick?  Not even close.  I just can't get excited about this.  IMHO not one of King's best.  "Cujo" had more scares.  "It" was horrendously creepy although the ending keeps it off this (and most other) lists.

"Here's Johnny!"

Jack Nicholson "The Shining," Warner Bros. 1979.

30 Days of Halloween - day 17
Now Playing: Lie to Me

One of the best closing scenes in ANY horror movie.  Filmed in reverse to increase the creep factor.  Creepy old house?  Check.  Hot chick?  Amy Irving.  check.  Special bonus hot chick: Nancy Allen.  Bonus appearances by William Katt, John Travolta and Piper Laurie (MAN what a part)  I'm talking of course of one of the best movies of my senior year in high school: Carrie.

It makes the list becasue of a different  senior year.  At dear old ONU they did all night movies at the MacIntosh Center on Halloween a few times.  I distinclyremember attending the whole night in 1979.  This movie was on the list.  Nosferatu (the silent verion) was there.  A movie that cracks our top five.  And I don't recall the other.  But it was fun.  My roommate and I and our girlfriends.  Percy.  Jim Percival.  He was a tight end and a hurdler.  Sheep farmer.  I ran cross country and the 400 and raised cattle.  He was a good roommate.  He married the girlfriend.  She was a basketball player.  They live outside of Xenia and he's the City Manager.  They'd fixed me up with another hoopster.  Pretty girl but painfully shy.  Lasted about 5 months.  But that night was a hoot.  Popcorn.  Sleeping bags. Halloween candy.  Apples and cider.  And 50 of my bestest friends.  One of my best Halloweens ever.  MUST be because I still remember it 30 years later, like it was ...well... less than 30 years ago.

30 Days of Halloween - day 16
Now Playing: True Blood

I HATE it when the interwebs eat my posts .... had a nice post here filled with witicisms, trivia and the solution to world peace.  But no.  Algore's little invention ate it.  And I'm tired.  So we'll close out this week of classics with the king of them all (IMHO): Frankenstein.  1931.  Boris Karloff.  And more recently Bobby DeNiro.  And don't forget Skip Hinant.  He played the monster on The Electric Company.  Met Abbot and Costello.  Took a bride (Elsa Lanchester).  Son of.  Curse of.  House of.  Ghost of.

A qucik note about two other kinds of movies not on my list.  Groups of animals.  Birds.  Ben.  Ants.  The Swarm.  Good movies but they just don't cut it. And ventriloquist dummies.  Devil Doll.  Magic.  Theyscare the bejebus outta me.  Don't ask - I have no IDEA why.  So.  One slasher film.  One zombie film.  No talking dummies.  No groups of animals.

Have a nice day.

OHSAA for posterity
Now Playing: Tenebre
Topic: Football

As many of you know dad and I have been "charting" the OHSAA computer points on our own for over 30 years.  It's fun, it's something that keeps us together and in touch during football seasons, and we get a kick out of correcting folks who pretty much have no idea how the system works.  So in the interest of getting a few things down in print before they happen I'd like to make a few predictions, most pertaining to Region 20.

It has long been by contention that, even with the new 8 team format, you need to win 1 quality game to be playoff eligable, plus one for every cake game on the schedule.  A quality win is a win against a team your size or bigger, with a winning record.  A cake game is an opponent who wins one or 0 games.  Here's the week 7 list for Region 20:

1.  Coldwater.   The class of the division with three quality wins, two cakes games.  No problem

2.  West Libert-Salem.  My good buddy Paul's Alma Mater.  7-0 but NO quality wins and one cake game.  Mechanicsburg looms  week 10.  They might make it without beating McBurg but will go on the road and loose in the first round.

3.  St. Henry  5-2.  Losses to Anna and Coldwater.  Quality wins over Pleasant (maybe) Eaton and Versailles.  No cake games.  In and good.

4.  North Union.  Longtime lousy program but it looks like they may have a team this season.  7-0.  Quality wins over Fairbanks and Highland.  Two cake games.  Two VERY tough games to close out the season.  Will need to win one to stay in the hunt.

5.  Anna 6-1.  Loss to Coldwater.  Quality win is St. Henry but two cake wins.  Average schedule  to close out the season.  Should be OK but lose in the

6.  Miami East.  6-1.   NO quality wins.  One cake win.  Face 7-0 Ansonia week 10.  It's a MUST win for them.

7.  West Jefferson.  Loss to Ready. Quality win over Mechanicsburg.  One cake win.  Close out with two 6-1 opponents, one of whom is Division 4.  Win either one and they're in.  Win them both and get a home game

8.  Bishop Ready.  A flakey schedule.  Nine games, four out of state, two against schools that play partial schedules.  Quality win - West Jefferson. Cake win this weekend.  Close with Bishop Hartley (5-2 div 4) and will need that win to make it.  They won't get it.

the other contenders:

9.  Hamilton Badin.  the scribes at JJ Huddle LOVE this team.  Quality win: Ross.  Three tough games to close out, all of them winable.  Probably in with two of them.

10.  Columbus Academy.  The bst team money can buy.  Quality win: Granville.  Two cake wins.  Average remaining schedule.  Probably won't make it unless West Jeff collapses.

11.   Mechanicsburg.  No qulaity iwns.  No cupcakes.  Play West Liberty Salem (tradional rival) week 9 in a must win.  This one's nasty.  Half a dozen times in the last few decades they didn't even finish the game!

Fairbanks et al just don't have the horses.

In another division staying in the old county - Jonathon Alder poses an interesting problem.  They're sitting in 8th place.  Closest thing to a quality win is 4-3 London.  Will get nothing this week and could lose the next two.  And even if they WIN the week 10 London-Madison Plains game could be the difference.  The Golden Eagles could knock them out of the post season.  And THAT would be a hoot.

Another in what is sadly becoming a long line

from Instapundit:

SO DON’T WORRY, YOUR HEALTH RECORDS WILL BE SAFE: Former police association contractor charged with snooping on ‘Joe the Plumber’. “A former contractor for the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police has been charged with rummaging through state computers to retrieve confidential information about ‘Joe the Plumber.’ . . . The State Highway Patrol says that Gerke used a law-enforcement computer network on Oct. 16, 2008 to access personal information about Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher. . . . The Dispatch revealed several questionable checks of state computer systems for confidential information about Wurzelbacher after the presidential debate. Helen Jones-Kelley, then director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, authorized several computer checks on Wurzelbacher that the state inspector general concluded had no legal purpose.”

If I can make it there
Now Playing: Rush

I'll make it anywhere ..... as the song goes.  Wonder if the President is just trying this whole "remaking the Constituion" thing on a small stage before he tries it on the home crowd.  He and Chavezhave continued to back Zelaya in Honduras.

What happened in Honduras was nothing short of the preservation of their democracy. Their president, Zelaya, tried to usurp the will of the people (sound familiar?).

Take this hypothetical: Imagine Obama announced that he was going to hold a referendum on legalizing a third term for himself. Imagine that even his attorney general Eric Holder advised him that it was illegal. Imagine that the Supreme Court ruled that holding the referendum was unconstitutional. In spite of that, let's imagine that Obama coerced the FEC to hold the referendum anyway. Then we found out that the referendum was being financed by Hugo Chavez. What should the Joint Chiefs do? That is exactly what occurred in Honduras to a tee. The Honduras Attorney General and their Supreme Court did exactly that. Their Generals did what they had to.

Remember when?
Now Playing: Rush
Topic: Politics

from The Anchoress, slightyl edited.

My readers have better memories than I do. Today, I got this in the mail from an reader who asks to be identified as “A Product of Pittsburgh Steelworkers”:

I had written to you before the election about how then Candidate Obama would no longer talk to a television station in Florida because he didn’t like some of the questions they asked Joe Biden. See your article Obama: Yes to Iran, No to WFTV from October 2008.

But even I would never have imagined that he would carry this over to an entire cable news network!

Again, he had said earlier that he [criticized Bush for the notion] that by not talking to people we are somehow punishing them. Now he is talking to the whole world, apologizing for the United States, but he won’t talk to Fox News!

I had asked in my October email, “Will he be this vindictive towards all Americans who don’t agree with him or his administration?” Well, he is and even more than I expected.

But I guess this gives you some degree of bragging rights. By writing your article, you can honestly tell your readers that “You read it here first on The Anchoress” about how Obama would later act towards those who don’t agree with him.”

Well, bragging rights are slim when I can’t even remember posting on it -the hazard of posting so much- but I must say, a chill ran through me when I read the italicized line above, and again when I heard this pronouncement from a White House podium.

Obama’s behavior is not presidential. Criticize Bush all you like, and yeah, he made it clear he didn’t much like the way the press covered him, but he talked to all of those news outlets who clearly hated him – hell, he talked to CBS even after the fake TANG episode with Dan Rather and Mary Mapes (whose fakery was recently exposed as even more egregious than we already knew). Bush spoke to Newsweek even after Evan Thomas promised to deliver “an additional ten to 15 percentage points to John Kerry” (which they managed, btw).

Obama, thin-skinned, more than a little cowardly and a bit petty, prefers to “punish” those members of the press who do not lay prostrate before him. And the mainstream press, because it is over-populated with spiteful perpetual adolescents who have become enthralled to the weird duality of hate/love that informs their politics, do not close ranks and say, “no, Mr. President, if you don’t talk to one of us, you don’t get your daily exposure from any of us.”

With one glaring exception, Obama’s media sycophants are so far up inside Obama, they cannot see their own futures. But then, they have voluntarily dissolved themselves, and tossed aside the public trust, in order to serve one man over the nation.

My issues, as always, are less about President Obama, than about the formerly free American press.

30 Days of Halloween - day 15
Now Playing: Forgotten

You might quibble with the order of the next two but hey, it's my list.  Almost 200 versions and permutations.  "I don't drink ... wine"  1931.  Dracula.

I'm going with the '31 version here but there were a LOT of permutations worthy of mention.  The 1992 version was visually stunning and deserves a viewing.  1922 Nasferatu - silent version with Max Schreck.   You and me and Christoper Lee ..... with a special no to Eric Carmen (yes, of the Raspberry's) who produced an album for a group called the Euclid City Beach Band, that included the GREAT song "There's a MoonOut Tonight"

30 Days of Halloween - Day 14
Now Playing: Fringe
Another classic.  The Woflman.  1941.  Lon Chaney Jr.  Claude Rains (who was also the Invisible Man, but I could never quite see him in that role .... sorry) ... Maria Ouspenskaya reciting poetry and Evelyn Ankers as the hot chick.  Lots of spin offs.  Met Frankenstein in 1943.  First goes to London in 1935.  Makes Micheal Landon a star as a teenager in 1955.  And is set for another remake in 2010 with B. DelTorres in the lead.
