Now Playing: Southland Tales

(with a hat tip to Jeff Goldblum and the folks at the Soady Deer Camp)

the following is pulled from Reason

Back in January, President Barack Obama told us all (including the future starving generations of poor kids whose food stamps are being sacrificed so teachers today can get paid by federal bailouts), that

Everybody in the country is going to have to sacrifice something, accept change for the greater good. Everybody is going to have to give. Everybody is going to have to have some skin in the game.

And back when Obama was trying to get the Olympics to Chicago, he was flanked by Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama, who talked about that trip as a sacrifice:

"As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the President to come for these few days, so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home."

Lady O's latest sacrifice?

The First Lady is spending the next few days in a five-star hotel on the chic Costa del Sol in southern Spain with 40 of her "closest friends." According to CNN, the group is expected to occupy 60 to 70 rooms, more than a third of the lodgings at the 160-room resort. Not exactly what one would call cutting back in troubled times.

Reports are calling the lodgings of  Obama's Spanish fiesta, the Hotel Villa Padierna in Marbella, "luxurious," "posh" and "a millionaires' playground." Estimated room rate per night? Up to a staggering $2,500. Method of transportation? Air Force Two.

As New York Daily News columnist Andrea Tantaros (from whom the preceding quotes are taken) observes:

To be clear, what the Obamas do with their money is one thing; what they do with ours is another. Transporting and housing the estimated 70 Secret Service agents who will flank the material girl will cost the taxpayers a pretty penny.

You said it, sister.

A recurring theme

Geitner didn't pay his.  Neither did Rangel.  Kerry recently got caught parking his yacht in RI so he wouldn't have to pay his.  As the "joke" goes Donks don't mind raising taxes because they aren't going to pay them anyway!  And now there's this:

Enter New York Representative Jerrold Nadler, who wants to exempt his own six-figure constituents from the tax hike he supports. Mr. Nadler's bill would "require the IRS to adjust tax brackets proportionally in regions where the average cost of living is higher than the national average."

In other words, the various tax brackets would apply to residents in certain regions at higher income levels versus other parts of the country. A family with an income of $50,000 or even $1 million in Manhattan would pay less federal income tax than a family with the same earnings in Omaha. The bill is called the Tax Equity Act, but a more accurate title would be the Blue State Tax Preference Act.

Really, did you expect anything less?

It's a mantra I drum into the thick little skulls of my legal writing students.  So imagine my (feigned) dismay when this came out of the White House in resonse to a Va. court decision allowing the state's challenge of Obamacare to continue:

This law came into being precisely because of the interconnectedness of our health care costs.   People who make an economic decision to forego health insurance do not opt out of the health care market, but instead shift their costs to others when they become ill or are involved in an accident and cannot pay.

We do not leave people to die at the emergency room door – whether they have insurance or not.

As observed by John Galt in The White House and Pronoun Trouble: Note the logic used to attempt to explain why the voluntarily uninsured deserve to be forced into paying: “they” are shifting their costs to others.  But how?  Because “we” refuse to not take care of them.  But then, isn’t it clear that “we” are shifting the costs, not “they”?  Did “they” demand treatment at gunpoint?  No.  ”We” provided treatment and demanded payment for it at gunpoint.  ”We” are bullies, who, because “we” are squeamish about letting people bear the consequences of “their” own choices, will trample over “their” rights to make those choices for them.

go read the whole thing.

Drinking to forget

over at Reason Jacob Sollum has an article on a recen drinking study.

"This morning Radley Balko noted a Gallup poll that found a larger percentage of Americans are drinking nowadays that in any year since 1985. In truth, though, the drinking rate has not changed very much since Gallup began asking about alcohol consumption in 1939. The rate that year was 67 percent, the same as this year's. "Despite some yearly fluctuations," the polling organization reports, "the percentage of Americans who say they drink alcohol has been remarkably stable over Gallup's 71 years of tracking it." The rate dipped into the 50s in just three of those years (1958, 1989, and 1997); otherwise it has ranged between 60 percent and 71 percent (a peak hit in 1976 and maintained through 1978). "

Anybody notice that the previous peak drinking was 76-78 - the Carter years, and now with Obamanomics?  Lows were 1958 (I Like Ike), 1989 (end of he Regan years) and 1997 (once the Clintons had lef office.)

I need a better blog engine so I could use more topic headings ... THIS one gets used disturbingly often.

Daily Kos editor dreams of liquidating opponents.

A Daily Kos contributing editor has suggested that “Steve Milloy and his buddies” commit suicide or be euthanized apparently for the crime of opposing global warming alarmism.

Amid a rant on his Examiner.com blog about skeptics “carpet-bomb[ing] newspaper editorial pages with climate change disinformation…], Steven Alexander, who writes for Daily Kos under the nom-de-plume “Darksyde,” wrote that,… if only Milloy and his buddies could check into one of the [Soylent Corporation’s] lovely medical suites for a short nature movie and a glass of wine…The reference is to the assisted suicide scene in the 1973 movie Soylent Green, starring Charlton Heston.

From Hot Air:

A new report by the Center for Public Integrity, based on testimony from people on scene and Coast Guard logs, contains evidence that the platform sunk because of a botched response from the Coast Guard, which failed to coordinate firefighting efforts and to get the proper resources to fight the fire:

Coast Guard officials told the Center for Public Integrity that the service does not have the expertise to fight an oil rig fire and that its response to the April 20 explosion may have broken the service’s own rules by failing to ensure a firefighting expert supervised the half-dozen private boats that answered the Deepwater Horizon’s distress call to fight the blaze.

An official maritime investigation led by Coast Guard Capt. Hung M. Nguyen in New Orleans is examining whether the salt water that was sprayed across the burning platform overran the ballast system that kept the rig upright, changing its weight distribution, and causing it to list.

The main source of the spill was not the blowout preventer, but the riser pipe to the rig.  When the rig collapsed and sank a few days after the blowout, the pipe tore open and began pouring tens of thousands of barrels of oil each day into the Gulf of Mexico.  Had the rig been salvaged, it’s likely that most of the spill would never have occurred.

The Coast Guard is not supposed to participate in firefighting, but instead assign an expert to coordinate the private firefighting efforts of the rig operator and its contractors.  The Coast Guard failed to do so, and the result was an uncoordinated, “general response” effort that mainly relied on salt water to extinguish the fires.  That is not the most effective way to fight rig fires; the best way is to use foam, which apparently wasn’t on hand.

Rob Bluey notes that the White House has been quiet about this, and has a few ideas why:

These new details raise serious questions for the White House, which has repeatedly pinned the blame on BP. If it turns out the Coast Guard is at fault — either because it didn’t follow proper procedures or couldn’t respond adequately because of a lack of resources — the public has a right to know why we’re just now learning this information 100 days after the disaster began.

That also has a relation to the administration’s insistence on imposing a moratorium on all new drilling in the Gulf.  If the issue was that previous inspections by the MMS couldn’t be trusted, it wouldn’t take a blanket moratorium to fix it.  MMS could reinspect each rig and allow new drilling to proceed on a case-by-case basis.  But if the Coast Guard has inadequate resources to address rig fires thanks to ill-conceived budget cuts, then their fear of expanded drilling makes a little more sense.

The White House needs to come clean on this point.  Certainly BP’s actions created the situation in the Gulf, but if the US response is what made it exponentially worse, we need to know that and take the corrective action necessary to ensure we don’t repeat it.

Administration spokesman Robert Gibbs ranted about Rush Limbaugh and how the government takeover of GM and Chrysler was a good thing, then made the kind of gaffe that we've come to expect from this administration of dunces:

"I'll let those that sat in the cheap seats a year-and-a-half ago and wanted to walk away" from a million workers, he continued, "explain to every one of those workers why they made that decision."

Finally, he wrapped it up: "And then you should ask Mr. Limbaugh — I don't know what kind of car he drives, but I bet it's not an F-150."

Ford, which makes the F-150 pickup, didn't take the bailout, and was the first of the three companies to turn a profit.

The Donks have no new ideas
Topic: Politics
That's what the President keeps claiming.  He's right .... except right now, Republican members of the House are getting their agenda discussion items, which they’ll test out back in their districts, from the leadership. According to a House GOP source, among ideas included are:

Require congressional approval of all new executive branch rules with an economic cost of $100 million or more, allow small businesses to take a tax deduction of up to 20 percent of their income, repeal Obamacare, replace Obamacare with reforms such as allowing Americans to purchase health care across state lines, end bailouts permanently, freeze Congress' budget, cut spending instead of more "stimulus" spending, place strict and enforceable caps on federal discretionary spending, codify the Hyde Amendment to ban all taxpayer funding of abortion, fully fund missile defense, require all bills to be posted online for at least three days before they can come to a vote, ban "omnibus" bills so that major legislation is advanced only one issue at a time, allow cameras in all committee hearings including the powerful Rules Committee that decides which bills and amendments come to a vote, keep Gitmo open and prevent the importation of terrorists into America, require all bills to cite the portion of the Constitution that gives Congress the authority to do what the bill proposes.
