I don't REMEMBER that part.
Topic: Economics

Somebody named JDSamson over at the HuffPo has a missive regardig the OWS protesters.  It includes this "shocker"

Like so many teenagers, I believed in the “American Dream,” that I could move to New York from the Midwest and become an artist. I would achieve both fame and success, and I would never have to think about money.

I don't EVER remember ANY of that as part of the American dream.  When did THAT hjappen?  Or perhaps it once again points out just how far from reality the Left has removed itself.

A little violence for the w/e
Topic: Media

before I start this post, I do NOT condone much of the violence perpetrated by the NYPD against the OWS protesters.   IMHO much of it has gone A&B.  This should NOT be taken as support for OWS OR the cause, whatever it turns out to be.

now.

Startig with some local color:

That's what University of Toledo student body president Matthew Rubin found out on Thursday. Governor Kasich was in Toledo to speak at an event in support of Issue 2. While waiting to go inside, he noticed a former classmate of his in the crowd. The two had even worked on a group project together for a communications class at UT. Then they made eye contact and that's when things started getting ugly.

We made eye contact at the event and he started yelling at me, saying I was a disgrace. I thought he was joking around so I walked over to say hello. When I greeted him, I was surprised that he was serious and he didn't stop yelling at me. Instead, he got more intense and started swearing at me calling me an "***hole" and a "scumbag" without being provoked whatsoever. He continued to yell at me as I stood there confused and others joined in. The yelling got more intense and I cannot recall exactly what was said because it got pretty loud but as is seen in the video on foxtoledo.com, one guy was screaming to "get back inside!" and I heard things like "get the f*** out of here" "you're a f***ing moron" come flying from my former classmate and others. I tried to engage them in a non-threatening way and the crowd seemed to get bigger around me. I was not able to say much over the shouting, but I really just wanted to know why all of the sudden my group project partner from last spring hated me all of the sudden. Luckily the cameras started showing up and some backed off, but others kept screaming obscenities.

Because history DOES matter
Topic: Economics

Bill NEVER ran a surplus and NEVER balanced the budget.

Heresy, I know, but here's some numbers.

(Source for all of the numbers below, US Treasury Direct).

Fiscal
Year
End
Date
  Public
Debt
Claimed Surplus
FY1997 09/30/1997   $3.789667T
FY1998 09/30/1998   $3.733864T $69.2B
FY1999 09/30/1999   $3.636104T $122.7B
FY2000 09/29/2000   $3.405303T $230.0B
FY2001 09/28/2001   $3.339310T

These figures include the public debt but not the intra-governmental debt.  Its like paying off your American Express card while ignoring the fact that your Mastercard over the limit and months past due. Your Amex looks great but your budget is not balanced.

When the Treasury department reports the National Debt (now at $14.5 trillion) it counts both public and intra-governmental debt. Clinton’s first full budget proposal in 1993 took effect in October 1993 and concluded September 1994 (FY1994) and his last started in October 2000 and ended in September 2001. Using those bookends and subtracting each year’s national debt from prior years,  here’s the national debt at the end of each year of Clinton Budgets.

Fiscal
Year
Year
Ending
National Debt Deficit
FY1993 09/30/1993 $4.411488 trillion $346.87 billion
FY1994 09/30/1994 $4.692749 trillion $281.26 billion
FY1995 09/29/1995 $4.973982 trillion $281.23 billion
FY1996 09/30/1996 $5.224810 trillion $250.83 billion
FY1997 09/30/1997 $5.413146 trillion $188.34 billion
FY1998 09/30/1998 $5.526193 trillion $113.05 billion
FY1999 09/30/1999 $5.656270 trillion $130.08 billion
FY2000 09/29/2000 $5.674178 trillion $17.91 billion
FY2001 09/28/2001 $5.807463 trillion $133.29 billion

To be fair, Clinton’s FY 2000 budget came very close, it only added about $18 billion to the national debt, but in his last budget he was back up over $130 billion.

Despite what you may hear from Democrats on the campaign trail, there were no giant surpluses that Bush squandered (Bush did overspend, but there was no surplus to squander). The myth of Clinton balancing the budget and producing surpluses belongs with unicorns and and elves, in the realm of myths. The last president to preside over a balanced budget/surplus was Dwight Eisenhower, whose government saw surpluses of  approximately $2 billion dollars in 1956 and 57.

From Scramblin' Fran
Topic: Economics

an interesting article from former Gints/Vikes QB.

In a WSJ article today by NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton, Tarkenton imagines an NFL set up like the public school system:

...Each player's salary is based on how long he's been in the league. It's about tenure, not talent. The same scale is used for every player, no matter whether he's an All-Pro quarterback or the last man on the roster. For every year a player's been in this NFL, he gets a bump in pay. The only difference between Tom Brady and the worst player in the league is a few years of step increases. And if a player makes it through his third season, he can never be cut from the roster until he chooses to retire, except in the most extreme cases of misconduct.

found over at Powerline:

The smart is Harold Hamm, the founder and CEO of Continental Resources and one of America’s richest men. Hamm is one of the primary developers of the Bakken oil fields; he estimates that they contain 24 billion barrels of oil. The dumb is Barack Obama. The Wall Street Journal describes Hamm’s meeting with Obama:

When it was Mr. Hamm’s turn to talk briefly with President Obama, “I told him of the revolution in the oil and gas industry and how we have the capacity to produce enough oil to enable America to replace OPEC. I wanted to make sure he knew about this.”

The president’s reaction? “He turned to me and said, ‘Oil and gas will be important for the next few years. But we need to go on to green and alternative energy. [Energy] Secretary [Steven] Chu has assured me that within five years, we can have a battery developed that will make a car with the equivalent of 130 miles per gallon.’” Mr. Hamm holds his head in his hands and says, “Even if you believed that, why would you want to stop oil and gas development? It was pretty disappointing.”

A few basic premises that the powers that be don't seem to recognize
Topic: Economics

1.  Who has the right to your work product?  You do.  Period.  That's the beginning.

2.  What IS "a job"?  How about we agree that it is a voluntary agreement between an employer and an employee for an exchange of labor for value.  Where is this wrong?

Now, given 1 & 2 - HOW ON EARTH can the government "create" jobs.  IF jobs are voluntary agreement they CANNOT be created by the gubmint.

When IS a job created and by whom is a job created?

3.  A job is created when an employer is able to enter into a voluntary agreement with an employee for an exchange of labor for value AND the benefit of said labor will result in a return greater than the cost incurred.

If I can hire you for $7.35/hr and you will provide a return on $7.36/hr or more a job will be created.   If your labor would cost me $7.37, there will be no job created.  Period.

It's late and I'm rambling but here's my base line question: would you rather have a job that pays $5 an hour or NOT have a job that would pay $10 an hour?  If you can answer that, and agree with 1, 2 and 3 above, you are ligh years ahead of our political elites.

Halloween countdown - 1930's

The age of the Classics all of which I've reviewed before.

1.  Frankenstein

2.  Dracula

3.  The Mummy

4.  Mystery of the Wax Museum The outlier of the bunch but a classic spooky watchable film nonetheless.  Lionel Atwill and Fay Wray paving the way.  A nice pastel look from the two strip technicolor technique.  A fast paced 77 minutes.

5.  keeping it all in the family we have Dracula's Daughter and Bride of Frankenstein.  The later features the iconic work of Elsa Lanchester and brings back Colin Clive and Boris Karloff (billed simply as "Karloff").  The former give us Gloria Holden in the title role and a surprisingly sympathetic vampire with a little but of a lesbian subtext (or maybe I was just LOOKIN' for it).  Both watchable.

Honorable mention for the decade: The Black Cat, The Vampire Bat, Tod Browning's Freaks and The Invisible Man (never COULD see Claude Raines in that role!)

New to view:  Dracula  – Spanish version filmed at the same time as the classic, and  The Bat Whispers  a haunted house/mystery flick - low expectations.

Friday fitness fun
Topic: Running

The last week has been .... hard on the w/o sched.  A useless three day trip to Joisey ... and starting a new class quarter ... has me revamping the whole idea.  It'll get fixed, just not right away.  The joy and curse of the everchanging schedule.  DID get some plyo and iso metrics in at the hotel.  Ran on Tuesday.  More metrics on Thursday.  But at least I feel rested.

I just don't wanna be any of THESE guys

I ran on a VERY good CC team in college, and was well to the back of the pack.  But our best runners were all VERY unorthadox.  One had broken his collar bone, caused him to throw his right foot out unnaturally.  One bounced.  One ran like a fullback.  One shuffled.  But we went undefeated at home for 3 1/2 years.  Whatever gets it done.
