Reuters reports that a German entrepreneur carefully studied the EU legislation that put a ban on traditional, incandescent light bulbs and found a loophole that enabled him to deliver the product consumers want.

My wife the tree hugger didn't even KNOW her beloved Donks ahd banned the ilb, costing the US a thousand jobs!   THAT's why i didn't help her re-register when we moved.

Sci-fi is probably off the lst unless it's "classic" or a stretch ..... Frankenstein is in, Alien isn't.  

Just because there's a monster in it does NOT make it on the list.  Most of the early classics were monster films: Frank, Drac, da Wolf, etc.  But Godzilla doesn't make the cut.  Nor does Kong.  Or Jaws.

Slasher movies don't make it, unless they are exceptional: Halloween.  Old style zombie movies are fine ... contemporary undead movies are not.  Ya gotta have some voodoo somewhere.  Exception: the origial night of the lving dead.

So haunted houses and ghosts and witches  and an occasional boogey man are all good.  Buckets of blood, science fiction, technicolor udead are not.  Freddie's dead.

Another classic for the season: An American Werewolf in London starring everybody's favorite Pepper  David Naughton, the requisite hot nurse  Jenny Agutter and the seemingly ageless still working  Griffin Dunne.  From the pen of John Nolte:

After delivering Animal House and The Blues Brothers, writer/director John Landis could pretty much make whatever film he wanted and what he wanted was to bring to life a decade old script that had suffered its share of rejection because no one thought pulling off very funny and very scary was possible. But pull it off Landis did, and quite brilliantly. Although it alternates between that now familiar (and much missed) early-eighties comic sensibility and outright gory chills and scares, Landis calibrates the film’s tone so well we hardly notice the continuing shift.

1.  North Union.  Quality team, deserves the top slot

2.  Cincy Hill Christian Academy:  2 quality wins, deserving of a top four seed even with two losses

3.   Summit Country Day: probable loss to North College Hill tonight, expect them to drop from the top 4.

4.  Our beloved RoughRiders.  Wins over Grandview and McBurg justify a post season slot but not a home bid.  And three wins over winless teams does NOT insipre confidence.  Last three opponents are 14-7 including 5-2 div 3 Licking Hts NEXT week.  Beating them should get a top for slot. 

This week we plat World Harvest Prep (4-3).  Looking at common oppoenets both schools blew out Millersport and Fischer Catholic.  WJ blew out Berne Union as well while the hapless Rockets actually got one of their two wins over HP.  Riders by 14.

Next weeks game vs Licking Hts will be MUCH closer, but imho the Riders are maybe just a point or two better.  Going on the road doesn't help.

Behind us we have Anna with wins over Lehman Catholic and Coldwater - deserving, but Versailles will have a say.  East Clinton has quality wins over Adena and Williamsburg but Clinton Massie lurks.  Coldwater has a qw over Ben Logan but Marion Local might keep them from rising.  The aforementioned Versailes holds the #8 slot.  QW over Celina is nice but b2b losses to Coldwater and Delphos St. Johns has put them in a hole.  Badin has a QW over div 2 Ross but will need to beat rival Fanwick next week to make it.  Fairbanks MIGHT be able ot edge in with a win over D4 Ironton.  NCH put the kaibosh on Clar Montesorri last week but if they can win out a road bid is still attainable.  Finally, WLS has a nice win over Northwester but it just won't be enough ... at 5-2 it's their only win vs a winning school and that might change so we'll make this the cutoff.

Harry Reid Picks Two Dead Senators as the Greatest LIVING Americans

One of the reasons Harry Reid is trailing Sharon Angle in his bid for reelection is an inability to listen to Nevada voters. As Senate Majority leader, Reid was instrumental in the Senate passing bills such as TARP, Porkulus and Obamacare, all of them passed over the objections of his Nevada constituents (as well as most Americans).

Nevada voters shouldn’t feel bad about their Senator not paying attention to their desires, because as the video below illustrates, Reid doesn’t pay attention to interviewers either

This recurring Halloween list is fun but .... there's gotta be some kinda guideline for what fits and what doesn't.  This years list is kinda lax and kinda fun with some off base entrys.  Fine.  But John Nolte over atBig Hollywood, who's doing a similar albeit more serious list has some thoghts.

"The hardest part of compiling this list was in trying to define what does and does not qualify as a horror picture. Most every definition out there has a slippery slope that can lead to all kinds of similarly-plotted films that don’t fit the genre. For instance, if you include Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” why not “Silence of the Lambs” and therefore “The Bone Collector,” “Kiss the Girls” and “Se7en?” What’s the difference between a slasher film and a violent thriller like Brian DePalma’s “Dressed to Kill”? And if you include “Halloween” why not “Shadow of a Doubt?” Furthermore, if you stick only to the supernatural, then you have to ask yourself if zombies qualify as supernatural, which I think is a road we’d all prefer not to go down. "

I am NOT a fan of the slasher film, but imho Hallowee deserves to be on this sort f list.  Most of its predecessors don't.   In my mind there’s a certain kind of horror perfect for this time of year when the wind’s cold, the leaves turn brown, and the sky is overcast. And in my own mind I’m twelve years old, my parents have let me stay up way past my bedtime because “Chiller Theatre” is on…

We go to the movies – especially horror movies – to experience something and “Blair Witch” is quite the experience – a stripped down, brilliantly edited chiller so intense that at times you’re tempted to shut it off and take a break.

The best test of a horror film is how well the scares hold up on repeat viewings and every few years or so “Blair” remains just as unsettling as ever. The movie’s so good in fact that I’ve forgiven it for whatever part it played in starting the truly evil trend of the shaky-cam. Shot using video and 16MM black and white, the wobbly, poorly framed cinematography actually adds considerably to the experience, as does the amateur acting.

Another test of a horror movie’s effectiveness is whether or not the scares stay with you long after the lights come up.  Trust me, the scares lingered.
