I don't think those words mean what you think they mean
Topic: QOTD

Question in the second debate: "What do you believe is the biggest misperception that the American people have about you as a man and a candidate?"

Obama's answer:  "I believe that the free enterprise system is the greatest engine of prosperity the world's ever known."

Really?  REALLY??  As David Harsanyi points out: I have no doubt that Obama believes he believes in free enterprise -- except in the case of health care policy, the auto industry, the housing market, education, banking, job creation, manufacturing, green energy and so on and so forth.

Soundtrack Sunday
Now Playing: Pats v Jets

Two movies who make the list based in large part on the soundtrack.

From Dusk til Dawn.  GREAT cast: George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis, Salma Hayek, Cheech Marin, Danny Trejo, Tom Savini, Fred Williamson, Michael Parks, John Saxon, Kelly Preston ...

and a few others.

The first 50 minutes is a crime spree by two maniac thieves (Clooney and Tarantino).  The last 50 minutes is gratuitous zombie/vampire  slaying.  But there is one segment form the 54-minute mark that make it ALL WORTH WHILE!  Even my WIFE loves this scene.  And most of the soundtrack is on my Halloween playlist:  The Blasters, Tito& Tarantula, Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble, Jimmie Vaughn and ZZ Top!

The second movie has five things going for it.  It's An American Werewold in London.  1)   Jenny Agutter.  2)  The greatest transformation scene in the history of ever 3) Jenny Agutter 4) killer soundtrack most of which is on my pod.  5) And did I mention Jenny Agutter

It also has the added advantage of having an embedded porn flick AND it ends when it's over.  Chase through London, WW killed.  Roll credits.  Fin.

Roughriders quit
Now Playing: NFL
Topic: Football

that's the only way to explain it.  They've lost their last two games to two teams who have NEVER beaten them!  That's right .....they were a combined 14-0 ... and are now 14-2.

Still 8th in the region but not gonna be playing in November.  Why?  a) last opponent is 1-8, so minimal points.  b)  seconday points possabilites are BAD (M'c burg vs 4-5 D4, London will lose to MP, Gview MIGHT beat LU, FC loses to LH.  So a WJ win and a GV upset means we'll have 11 points.

Working from the bottom:

Huntington MUST win (vs 8-1 D4) and have help - not happening

National Trail - MUST win over Miami East and have EVERY other game go the right way.  Not going to happen, but we DO need them to beat Miami East

Versailles MUST beat St. Henry and have help.  They might beat the Jays but they won't get the help.

Mariemont must beat 4-5 D4 Taylor, and have some help.  Not happening.

Paint Valey - must beat 5-4 D4 team AND have help ....tie should keep them out

Miami East.  IF they beat NT, they pass us regardless.  Key game.

Marion Pleasant.  If they beat 6-3 D3 they pass us.  Not gonna happen.  If they lose it comes down to 2nd leval points.

Chalker v Mathews, RidgeDale v Cardington, Elgin v River Valley

delayed posting due to travel recovery

The big three:  Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man.  Could be the Big Four if I throw in the Mummy, but he didn't make the cut this year.  Neither did the Phantom, who's either too early or too late to be in the club.  And the Creature from the Black Lagoon? Whole different can o tuna, imho, even WITH Julie Adams looking hot in that white one piece.

Let's start with the last, the Wolf Man.  Doesn't age well, past Maria Ouspenskaya and her fortune telling.  Lon Chaney Jr. is servicable as Larry Talbot but I could never figure what Evelyn Ankers saw in him.  Of courswe we have Bela Lugosi again, and in his second appearance on the list Ralph Bellamy.   This one hasn't aged well.   Perhaps because technology has passed it bye, perhaps because of all the remakes.  Watchable as part of the trio, but not a high recommendation.

Dracula.  Bela Lugosi and a bunch of other people.  We now have vampires who sparkle so old pre-Hayes code dead Rumanians just don't get it done anymore.  Perhaps the weakest of the trio, but as per the above, needs to be watched to fill out the season.

Frankenstein.  Stands the test of time surprisigly well.  Boris Karloff gets it right.  Although the material is relatively melodramatic, and occasionally extremely so (especially in the case of Henry Frankenstein), the performances always come across as serious and realistic rather than campy (with the possible exception of a single snarling "growl" from the monster when he encounters Elizabeth, Frankenstein's bride-to-be). Contrast this to how Tod Browning's Dracula plays in the present day. In that film, Lugosi  comes across as occasionally campy, especially in the close-ups of his "hypnotically staring" eyes. Even the one character that is meant to give some light comic relief, that of Frankenstein's father, Baron Frankenstein (Frederick Kerr), is comic only in that the character is a bit sarcastic, with a dry sense of humor. As such, Kerr portrays the Baron seriously, also.

Because there is no score, the actors have no help in amping up the emotions in their performances. Despite this, rarely has either Boris Karloff's monster or Colin Clive's mad doctor been matched. Whale helps with some ingenious shots and sequences, such as the "progressive close-ups" when we first see the monster. He also gives us a number of "stage-like" devices that work remarkably well, such as the pans through cutaways in the set that in the film's world do not really exist. Interestingly, Whale has still had the cutaways decorated as if they are extant in the film's world. Although they may seem dated now, Whale's technique of fading to black between scenes also amplifies the sense of "literary chapters" in the story, and gives an effective, ambiguous sense of time passage between the scenes.

Whale also achieves some wonderful, more understated scenes of horror in the film, often set up by contrasts. For example the severe contrast of the villager walking into the wedding party with his daughter, and the surreal bucolic adventure of the villagers working their way through the countryside to find the monster.

Watch it again, and again.

Now Playing: Browns Bengals

Bama is still #1.  Any questions?

2.  SHOULD be Oklahoma, but that loss is killing em.  So we'll give it to Oregon.  Barely.  Schedule issues.

3.  Notre Dame, thanks to some questionabe officiating.  Gotta get em to national prominance again so they can afford to pay off the damages settlement to that student photographer.

4, 5 and 6 are Oklahoma, Florida and South Carolina in no particular order.

Ohio State?  I have em 18th.  Not convinced they can beat the school up north.  If they DO, and are undefeated when it happens, they should be top 10.

My wife always requests these an I throw em on the list.  They're fun Halloween flicks that kids can enjoy and adults won't necissarily roll thier eyes at.

1.  Hocus Pocus.  The silliest of the lot.  Midler and Najimay are a hoot.  SJP is, well, SJP.  And Thora Birch six years before American Beauty.

2.  Practical Magic.  I absolutely ADORE Sandra Bullock.  And this marks the second appearance on the list for Nicole Kidman.   Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are fun as the mothers.  And Evan Rachel Wood a decade before Across the Universe and The Wrestler.

3.  Witches of Eastwick.  Not really for the kiddies, but younger adults will enjoy.  Some of my least favorite people, although talented actors.  Nicholson, Cher, Sarandom, Pfiefer.  Veronica Cartwright in my favorite scene.

There, honey.  Ya happy?

Topic: Economics

Another though buble floats to the surface.  Most of us (making a huge assumption here) believe that markets/capitolism/economies work as follows: somebody makes something and others either buy it or they don't.  If they don't, the venture fails.  If they do, it succeeds.  The current occupant of the oval office seems to think that the Goventment picks what succeeds and doesn't and that wishing makes it so, rather than actual knowledgable choices by the public.  Witness Washington Post Op/Ed Decries Liberal Green-Energy Crony Capitalism and Stimulus Cronyism and

Old and New
Now Playing: Dracula (1979)
Topic: Movies

First the new.  Does 1999 count?  M Night Ramalamadingdongs first big hit 6th Sense.  No spoilers.   If you've seen it once, see it again.  If you've seen it twice you know what I mean.

And now the old, about which I wax MUCH more poetic.  Island of Lost Souls.  There's a Spanish and Dutch version.  Haven't seen 'em.  The '77 Lancaster/York (what an interesting pairing in its own right) is barely watchable.  The '96 Brando/Kilmer less so.  Unless you LIKE watching Brando in white face playing up the homosexual overtones Charles Laughten first brought to the '32 version.  But enough about that.

Universal had cornered the movie monster market in 30-31 (Drac, Frank, Invisible Man [never COULD see Claude Rains in that role]).  Paramount tried to keep pace with Jekyl/Hyde, and this.  Classic lit from H.G. Wells.  It was outlawed in many nations around the globe due to the unpalatable ethical and religious issues it raised. The film was produced before the infamous Hays Code was set up and thus was able to introduce radical scenes of horror and deviant sexuality that would become taboo until the liberalisation of movies in the early 1970's.

From IMDB: The film moves at a cracking pace and every second of the 71 minutes running time is well utilized, the production values are high and the sets look fabulous, the performances are very good, especially Laughton who resembles a seductive and effeminate Mephistopheles whilst Bela Lugosi, as the Sayer of the Law, is totally convincing in his role as the island elder. His makeup resembles the Wolf-Man and it is impossible to recognise him except through that rich and extravagant voice of his. Lota the Panther Woman, played by the winner of a Paramount publicity audition contest (where over 60,000 hopefuls were tested), is played by Kathleen Burke. Every time she appears the screen sizzles with creamy eroticism. Her body moves like an athletic cat and yet she is very innocent and tender. The moment she uncurls her fingers and reveals her clawed fingers in the moonlight will shrivel the most aroused male member of the audience. The script, although it does deviate from the novel in places, is literate and intelligent. There is a great deal of subtext on display - Laughton dressed in his immaculate white hat and suit and wielding a bull-whip over the animal-natives is a great metaphor for slavery and the invasion of Paradise.

This is right up there with FREAKS (1932) in terms of naked human horror.  HIGHLY recommended

Region 20, week 9
Now Playing: Blair Witch Project
Topic: Football

Roughriders led 10-7 at the half, trailed14-10 at the end of the third ... had the ball 1st and goal at the LH 5 - - - then had over 100 yards of penalties in the 4th quarter!  36-16 loss (last TD was an int return).  Riders still have a shot at post season play but will need to go on the road.

Coldwater and Covington are in.  Covington surprised #9 National Trail 78-6!  Riders don't wanna player EITHER of those two early.  Current #3 is Cincy Summit Country Day.  A win in either of their last two puts em in.  They appears to be a legit squad.  #4 is Dayton Christian.  They've run up some huge scores against a weak schedule.  They'll make it but will be a 1 and done.

#5.  is West Liberty Salem.  WJ fans had been pulling for Triad to beat them.  After the loss to LH we now need WL-S to fend off the Cardinals!  That win would make WL-S legit.  #6 is relative newcomer Dixie. No surprise if they lose the last 2 and fail to proceed.  #7 Triad also controlls their own destiny but an 0-2 conclusion wouldn't surprise me.   West Jeff rounds out the top 8.  A win over Berne Union next week should put em in.

IMHO Dixie and Triad are out.  This opens the door for #9 Marion Pleasant.  They need help or a win over Buckeye Valley week 10 to make it.  #10 Anna is 4-4 and going nowhere.  #11 needs to win one of it's last two to steal a low spot.  Keep an eye one em. 12 National Trail needs to win both.  Miami East is done but 14 Huntington might slip in at #8 with 2 more wins.

The rest of the field, while mathematically alive, are to far back to mention.

So.  Games to watch week 9:

Cincy SCD vs Clark Montesorri, Dayton Christian vs Belmont, Dixie vs Madison, Triad vs Southeastern,Versailles vs Minster
