You can't go wrong with Andy Warhol.  Well. Actually, you can.  And so we have Blood for Dracula, a 1974 offering produced by Warhol, directed by Paul Morrisey and including Udo Keir as one of the wors Dracula's ever and Joe Dallasandro.  Fright?  None.  Special effects?  None?  Plot?  None.  Babe factor?Milena Vukotic, Dominique Darel Stefania Casini, and Silvia Dionisio

4 out of 10 for the laugh factor.

Leatherface: TCSM III.  Just what you'd think, but with Viggo Mortenson.  Scares?  Several.  Special effects?  Limited.  Plot?  Heh.  Babe factor?  Kate Hodge  2 out of 10.

obligatory October movie series
Topic: Movies

Stigmata.  1999.  Directed by Rupert Wainright.  Yes, THAT RW.  featuring Patricia Arquette  •  Gabriel Byrne.  Not a bad little flick.  Scares?  A few.  Plot?  Interesting twist on an old story.  Special effects?  Not bad for a 15 year old film.  Babe factor?  Patricia Arquette, so, minimal.  Another 6 out of 10.

and

Graveyard Shift - adaptation of S King's novel of a rat-infested textile mill.  As bad as it sounds, although Brad Dourff tries his slimy best to salvage it.  Scares?  a few.  Plot?  It's S king .... so not much.  Special effects?  Minimal.  Babe Factor?  Kelly Wolf.  3 out of 10.

obligatory October movie series
Topic: Movies

now with NO pumpkin spice flavor.

We'll start slow and build to the good stuff.  Methodology?  I use Flickchart.com.  I viewed each of it's applicable genres, from Horror to each of it's  variants, to the specialities of form - Vampire movies, werewolf movies, etc.  I took the top 3 in each catagory as voted by the users, the top three as ranked by me, and the top three that I haven't seen.  Came up with about 60 movies.  Not all will be included in this countdown as some of the "not yet seens" don't merit mention.  We'll start with the not yet seen movies then climb the ladder, more of less, of the ones I HAVE seen.

Our starters are twofold.  Q: The Winged Serpent and The Quiet Ones.

Q was a typical monster movie from 1972 featuring

Scares?  Not many.  Special effects?  Unconvincing rubber monster.  Plot?  You're kidding, right?  Babe factor?  Medium to high, with Ms. Clark, and with several topless sunbathers being eaten.  1 out of 10 at best.

The Quiet Ones is a 2014 feature about A university professor and a team of students conducting an experiment on a young woman, uncovering terrifyingly dark, unexpected forces in the process.  Scares?  A few.  Special effects?  State of the art.  Plot?  Interesting but forgotten about an hour in.  Babe factor?  Virtually non-existant.  6 out of 10 just for being new.

More of the Donk's War on Women
Topic: Politics

War on Women: 'The View' Promotes Violence Against Sarah Palin

WHY WON’T KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND NAME THE MEN SHE SAYS HARASSED HER? Ann Althouse offers numerous theories — pretty much all unflattering to Gillibrand — but I favor this one:

She wants to protect the men she hasn’t named. They’re her political allies, perhaps quite well-known characters. I think we can assume that they are all Democrats, since we haven’t heard otherwise and she probably would have taken the opportunity to ding Republicans, and since Republicans would be more likely to maintain formal politeness with her and not to assume that they could take liberties.

Of course, there’s also this possibility: “Maybe it didn’t happen. There are no names named because there are no names to name.” She could have just been pulling a Neil deGrasse Tyson.*

“MEANWHILE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAS TURNED INTO PEYTON PLACE.” Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Hillary Clinton, and the Democrats’ War On Women. “If the targets of back-biting were Republican women I have little doubt that the media would hop on the “war on women” bandwagon. Really, why is poor Wasserman Shultz taking blame when the male president is responsible for the party’s bad fortunes? And how [many] of these ‘personal questions’ about Clinton have to do with her age — a sign of sexism in a world in which men grow distinguished and women grow old? (If you think this is pure silliness, you know how Republicans feel when accused of misogyny.)”

Biden to women’s conference: I miss Republicans like Bob Packwood.

Maine Democratic gubernatorial candidate promotes video with sexual remark about Sen. Susan Collins.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Really Wants Poor People To Stop Having Babies.

ASHE SCHOW: Democrat ‘war on women’: AG office blames victim of rape. “Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane, a Democrat, is having a rough year. To add to the problems she caused herself several months ago by quashing a corruption investigation into fellow Democrats in Philadelphia, her office has just gone to court and blamed a woman who was raped in a state prison for what happened to her.”

STALE AND STUPID: The Hill: Democrats’ ‘war on women’ falling flat in Colo. Senate race.

WAR ON MEN: Cindy Boren: Hope Solo and the domestic violence case no one is talking about.

*New York TImes: It Was Daniel Inouye Who Made Sexist Remark To Kirsten Gillibrand. Plus, some history: “With his deep baritone and courtly manner, Mr. Inouye was revered by his colleagues and was a powerhouse in both Hawaii and the Senate, where he was a reliable supporter of women’s rights. But in an all but forgotten chapter of his career, the senator had been accused of sexual misconduct: In 1992, his hairdresser said that Mr. Inouye had forced her to have sex with him. Her accusations exploded into a campaign issue that year, and one Hawaii state senator announced that she had heard from nine other women who said they had been sexually harassed by Mr. Inouye. But the women did not want to go forward with their claims.”

So, he was a typical Senate Democrat, then.

More nastiness from the left
Topic: Politics

With Nancy Pelosibatting leadoff

Nancy Pelosi Says Republicans Will End Civilization. On Friday, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stated that Democrats had to retain control of the Senate. Why? Because “civilization as we know it today would be in jeopardy if the Republicans win the Senate.” She then claimed that Democrats were not “fear-mongers,” but instead “messengers of hope.”

TV host Bill Maher listened to this with a straight face.

Pelosi Says Republicans Hate Children. In March 2014, Pelosi stated that Republicans hate kids:

I asked a Republican friend why his party remains so opposed to extending the vital lifelines for struggling families and really hungry children. This colleague’s response was telling in its blunt nature and it’s stunning in its honestly. What he said was to the Republican caucus, these people you are talking about are invisible, and the Republican caucus is indifferent to them. Invisible and indifferent. This is just plain wrong.

There are two lies here: first, that Pelosi has any Republican friends, and second, that Republicans hate kids. Given her ardent advocacy for abortion-until-birth, the opposite would seem to be more likely.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz Says Scott Walker Beats Women. The head of the Democratic National Campaign Committee, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), said last week that Republican Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker “has given women the back of his hand. I know that is stark. I know that is direct. But that is reality.” Just to clarify that she wasn’t misspeaking, Wasserman Schultz continued: “What Republican Tea Party extremists like Scott Walker are doing is they are grabbing us by the hair and pulling us back. It is not going to happen on our watch.” She had no comment on Bill Clinton or Ted Kennedy.

Harry Reid Calls Tea Partiers Anarchists. The Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), isn’t the only Democrat to attack Tea Parties – for years, high-ranking Democrats all the way up to the White House have suggested that Tea Partiers are racists and terrorists. In September 2013, Reid called conservatives “anarchists” and “fanatics” for opposing Obamacare.

Steve Israel Calls Republicans Racist. Another meme that has been floating around since the election of the nation’s first black president has been the notion that all opposition to Obama’s agenda is based on his race. The chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) said back in April that “to a significant extent, the Republican base has elements that are animated by racism, and that’s unfortunate.” His comments followed hard on comments by Nancy Pelosi in which she said Republicans opposed any amnesty because of racism: “I’ve heard them say to the Irish, if it were just you, this would be easy.”

Judicial roundup
Topic: Law

ROLL CALL: Stalled Georgia Judicial Nominee Presents a Dilemma for Senate Democrats.

TPM’s Sahil Kapur writes:

A total of 155 nominations for the executive and judicial branches are pending on the Senate floor, and there’s nowhere near enough time to confirm them all before the next Congress is sworn in. That includes 50 vacancies on district courts and 7 vacancies in appeals courts, and more will open up.

But the 155 nominations “pending on the Senate floor” do not in fact “include[] 50 vacancies on district courts and 7 vacancies in appeals courts.” As the Senate executive calendar that Kapur links to shows, there are (by my quick count) only seven nominations of district-court judges pending on the Senate floor and zero nominations of federal appellate judges. As Kapur’s second link shows, Obama has not yet nominated anyone to any of the seven pending appellate vacancies, and he has made only 25 nominations to the 50 district-court vacancies. Further, as this more detailed list shows, 15 of those 25 nominations have been made since mid-June.

ISIS roundup
Topic: War

NOT Archer's spy organization OR the old female TV super-hero.

The JV team ISIS.  Or ISIL.  Or Prince.  Or whatever we're calling them today.

RON FOURNIER: ISIS: Is Obama Leading or Being Led? Fournier offers some reasons why Americans don’t approve of Obama on this issue:

He doesn’t seem to be taking the threat seriously enough.

His assurances are habitually wrong.

He stubbornly clings to his views.

I’d say “bitterly clings,” but that’s just to make a funny.

Obama’s Grotesque Flip-Flops on Congressional Authorization for War

Background: NYT Baghdad bureau chief: The White House lied to Americans for years about what bad shape Iraq was in.

UPDATE: Heh.

Michael Hayden, former director of both the National Security Agency and the CIA, has been offering his wisdom on warfare in Iraq, and it's ... interesting. Hayden told U.S. News & World Report that President Obama's plan to try and bomb ISIS out of Syria instead of sending in ground troops has "all of the attraction of casual sex."

A ringing endorsement, right? Wrong! Hayden is no fan of the casual sex, and no fan of Obama's plan, which he said "seems to offer gratification but with very little commitment."

"I guess he's right," quipped Jessica Roy at New York. "Unlike ground troops, drones don't spend the night."

SO HOW’S THAT GOING FOR YOU NOW, CHAMP? Read this 2008 op-ed by candidate Obama on Iraq. Then laugh, or cry.

Teach women ...

there's been a strong meme lately about "teaching men not to rape."  I think it might be missing the point.

Woman Charged With Breaking Into Home, Raping Man In Seattle. “The unidentified, 31-year-old man said he awoke at 2 a.m. on June 17, 2013 to Gilman straddling him and having sexual intercourse with him. Police say he told the 240-pound suspect to get off, but she allegedly refused and told him to be quiet. He was able to break free from underneath her and said he pushed her out of the apartment.”

Lawsuit: Female Nurse Had Sex With Medicated Patient. “A man who was in the ICU on medication and awaiting a heart transplant says a nurse came into his room and had sex with him against his wishes, reports CBS Chicago. . . . The suit accuses the facility of negligence because the nurse had a history of such things.”
