President Obama calls the United States and Europe ‘developing countries’ in latest embarrassing gaffe. “As we’ve seen on a number of previous occasions, Barack Obama clearly struggles with his words when he is without his beloved teleprompter. He famously claimed to have visited 57 states in his 2008 campaign, and recently was unable to tell the difference between England and Great Britain. I don’t think any American president, however, has ever referred to the United States, leader of the free world, as a “developing country” before, and nor is Europe a country, as much as the emperors of the European Commission would like the EU to be a superstate. In addition to being embarrassing, the president’s interview will prove controversial in parts of Europe, and won’t go down well in Berlin and London.”

Great Orator Gaffes Again: One comment makes him akin to Akin.

“The odds of people dying in a terrorist attack obviously are still a lot lower than in a car accident, unfortunately,” President Obama told NBC’s Jay Leno last night.

Wait, “unfortunately”? Does the president really wish more Americans were killed in terrorist attacks? Indeed, orders of magnitude more, since nationwide traffic fatalities typically run between 30,000 and 50,000 a year?

ABC and NBC on Wednesday continued to pretend that one of Barack Obama's gaffes on the Tonight Show wasn't a mistake. World News's Jon Karl and Nightly News's Chuck Todd uncritically repeated the President's claim that Vladimir Putin "headed up the KGB." [See video below. MP3 audio here.] In fact, he did not. The highest rank the now-Russian President obtained was Lieutenant Colonel in 1991.

• Those Imaginary chats with Eleanor Roosevelt - This one seems like a visual slam dunk, the sight of the First Lady having tea with a former First Lady--in her mind, at least. Imaginary conversations wouldn't help Clinton's image, so these chit-chats will have to go.
• The Reset Button - The so-called smartest politician in the world reached out to Russia with a gimmick so silly Carrot Top would hurl it back into his prop trunk. She brought a red "reset" button to her meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as a way to distance herself from past negative vibes. Too bad she didn't bring her English to Russian dictionary along since she bungled the translation. The moment wasn't just embarrassing on the surface. Her button malfunction also signaled how she would undercut our allies in the region. 
• "Under Sniper Fire" - Clinton tried to burnish her tough gal image with a fictitious story in which she was in danger from sniper fire during a 1996 trip to Bosnia. Clinton repeated the tale several times before admitting her landing reception wasn't quite so deadly. 
• "What Difference ... Does It Make?" - Clinton's infamous reaction to a line of questioning regarding the death of four Americans in Benghazi is a portrait of clinical indifference, and a quote that would haunt the rest of her political career had a Republican uttered it in that context.
• "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" - Clinton uttered this defense of her philandering husband, President Bill Clinton, as the Monica Lewinksy scandal was finding its legs. She blamed the rumor of her husband's unfaithfulness on his political enemies, the so-called "vast right wing conspiracy" committed to ruining his career. This moment might make the final cut, if only put in the context of Republicans using her husband's infidelities as a weapon against him. As if Democrats would do no such thing.

And one more underling: We Do Not Have An Increasing National Debt! Er, yes we do. Is it possible that Sen. Landrieu doesn’t understand the difference between the annual deficit, and the national debt?

Here's an interesting geographical cognate from the Guardian:

There is one Republican governor left in New England: Paul LePage of Maine, and one Democratic governor in the old south: Mike Beebe of Arkansas. LePage only won 38% of the vote in 2010 and would have lost had his competitors not split the vote. Polling shows he's incredibly vulnerable in 2014. Beebe is required by term limits to step down in 2014, and Republicans are favored to win his seat.

If Republicans win Arkansas in 2014 and Le Page gets knocked off in Maine, it could be the final dent in the old coalitions of a Democratic south and Republican New England. Assuming no other changes in these regions' governor affiliations, it would be the first time no Republican governor held office in New England and no Democratic governor did so in a confederate state since the end of Reconstruction. In other words, we're basically back to civil war-era politics.

So what of it? Are we reaching a tipping point where normal cultural variations are morphing into outright contempt between various regions of the country? Or is this all just an overreaction to healthy ideological sorting? Can an enhanced role for federalism ameliorate some of the tensions?

In the sixties, the left changed the definition of racism.

If conservatives complain about the debt, they are racist. If conservatives complain about the deficit, the healthcare system, illegal immigration, Social Security, gun control—any contemporary issue—we are labeled racist.

Adding insult to injury, most calls of racism are shouted by white progressives. White progressives are undoubtedly sincere in their beliefs; they are convinced with 100 percent certainty their shouts of “racism” are completely justified.

Conservatives react to this justification with disbelief. We laugh it off, joke it off, or create a funny #hashtag in mockery. We defend ourselves from their attacks, claiming no one is falling for their tactics.

Yet, we lose.

Recently, Attorney General Eric Holder told the NAACP Convention that his father sat him down at age 15 and told him how to behave when around policemen. Though he admitted that race relations in America have improved since then, he went on to say that his father hoped that his conversation would be the last time a father in America would have to sit down and tell a child how to behave around a cop.

NEWS FLASH: Though no white person would ever pretend to know what it is like to be black and confronted by a white cop, my father sat me down (as his father sat him down, and as I sat down my son) and told me how to behave around police.

. . . . 

Those of us of a certain age remember Huey Newton, Bobby Seal and Eldridge Cleaver shouting that the Oakland Police Department was no different than Storm Troopers in Poland or Russian occupiers in Prague. They may have had a justifiable point. It was something that needed to be fixed.  

However, if it was true (and those of us who didn't experience it were in no position to deny it) it was not just a black/white thing.

During the occupation of Nanking, Chinese parents told their kids how to behave around Japanese soldiers. Polish and Jewish Parents in German cities told their kids how to behave if stopped and questioned unreasonably by the German authorities. Today, in Rwanda, Hutu fathers have to tell their kids how to behave around Tutsi cops--and they are all the same ethnicity. Should we bring up Sunnis and Shiites? You can bet, depending upon which sect is in power in which country) that parents have to explain to their kids how to behave around cops of the opposite faction.

Secretary of State John Kerry referred to the Palestinian Authority as a country while speaking last week at the United Nations.

Talking to journalists last Thursday, Kerry said: “It’s my hope that that will be able to happen as procedures are put in place by both countries in order to empower that.”

The comments sparked speculation that the administration was changing its foreign-policy views on Israel. A spokesman for the State Department dismissed the speculation, explaining that Kerry simply misspoke. When asked by a journalist to clarify the comment, Kerry responded: “Did I say that?”

One thing I noticed throughout the Martin/Zimmerman story cycle: the “opinion/fact” mutation. As more facts are introduced into the mix, opinions don’t disappear after being proven wrong, they simply mutate.

We’ve seen this with other issues and debates: global warming, for example, mutated into climate change. When statistics revealed that the earth hasn’t warmed in a decade and a half, you then offer opinions about climate in general to maintain your point of view. We do this all the time, in our personal lives, too. After we exhaust all opinions, we are ultimately left with, “I really don’t want to go see your mother.”

I watch a lot of TV and movies.  I'm usually willing to suspend disbelief but SOME shows are just TOO far fetched, even for me.  Take this thing I've been watching on The History Channel.  It's called "World War II."

 

Let’s start with the bad guys. Battalions of stormtroopers dressed in all black, check. Secret police, check. Determination to brutally kill everyone who doesn’t look like them, check. Leader with a tiny villain mustache and a tendency to go into apopleptic rage when he doesn’t get his way, check. All this from a country that was ordinary, believable, and dare I say it sometimes even sympathetic in previous seasons.

I wouldn’t even mind the lack of originality if they weren’t so heavy-handed about it. Apparently we’re supposed to believe that in the middle of the war the Germans attacked their allies the Russians, starting an unwinnable conflict on two fronts, just to show how sneaky and untrustworthy they could be? And that they diverted all their resources to use in making ever bigger and scarier death camps, even in the middle of a huge war? Real people just aren’t that evil. And that’s not even counting the part where as soon as the plot requires it, they instantly forget about all the racism nonsense and become best buddies with the definitely non-Aryan Japanese....

I’m not even going to get into the whole subplot about breaking a secret code (cleverly named “Enigma”, because the writers couldn’t spend more than two seconds thinking up a name for an enigmatic code), the giant superintelligent computer called Colossus (despite this being years before the transistor was even invented), the Soviet strongman whose name means “Man of Steel” in Russian (seriously, between calling the strongman “Man of Steel” and the Frenchman “de Gaulle”, whoever came up with the names for this thing ought to be shot)....
