STILL steaming!

Let's take a look a the stats:

Contributions? Obama the top recipient of donations from BP

Residential assistance? Remember Rahm Emanuel’s rent-free D.C. apartment? The owner: A BP adviser, Stanley Greenberg.

Regulations in place? Bush gave Deep Water Horizon 6 citations for safety violations.

Regulations ignored? Regulators Under Obama Failed to Inspect Deepwater Horizon

And the hits just keep on coming: Follow these standard Washington links if you can:

Greenberg's consulting firm was a prime architect of BP's recent rebranding drive as a green petroleum company, down to green signs and the slogan "Beyond Petroleum."

Greenberg's company is also closely tied to a sister Democratic outfit -- GCS, named for the last initials of Greenberg, James Carville, another Clinton advisor, and Bob Shrum, John Kerry's 2004 campaign manager.

According to published reports, GCS received hundreds of thousands of dollars in political polling contracts in recent years from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Probably just a crazy coincidence. But you'll never guess who was the chairman of that Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee dispensing those huge polling contracts to his kindly rent-free landlord.

Ignorance or Malice?
Now Playing: Limits of Control
Topic: Economics

A national survey shows that
leftists in America have a
very hard time understanding the law of supply and demand
and
other facts of economic life.

Hayek rarely accused those on
the left of anything other than intellectual error.

Then
there's this from the Donk canditae for the Gov of Cali:
The
conventional viewpoint says we need a jobs program and we need to cut
welfare. Just the opposite! We need more welfare and fewer
jobs
. Jobs for every American is doomed to failure because
of modern automation and production. We ought to recognize it and
create an income-maintenance system so every single American has the
dignity and the wherewithal for shelter, basic food, and medical
care.

That's
Jerry Moonbeam Brown. Vintage.
(full transcript here)

And on the floor of the House
even Ben Bernanke appears flummoxed:

',width:'100',height:'100'" width="100" height="100" align="" />

And the POTUS isn't exempt.
President Obama in his speech to
the graduates of that school up north (soon to be delivering pizzas
and serving fries from coast to coast) defended the government’s
interference in railroad building and in the Great Depression. “When
we needed a way to reach the Pacific, our government helped build the
railroads,” the president boasted. Then he added, “When the
markets crashed during the Great Depression, and people lost their
life savings, our government put in place a set of rules and
safeguards to make sure that such a crisis never happened
again.”

Wrong on both counts. The Union Pacific and Central
Pacific were poorly built railroads, they went broke, and both cost
the nation over $60,000,000 to build -- a sum higher than the total
national debt just a decade before they were built. By contrast, the
Great Northern Railroad, which was built with private money by James
J. Hill, never went broke and was arguably the best-built railroad in
the nation.

On the Great Depression, government intervention
did not rescue the nation. The U. S. had more than 20 percent
unemployment in 1939, toward the end of FDR’s second term. On the
contrary, government intervention -- through the Smoot-Hawley Tariff,
the Farm Board, and the income tax hike to 63 percent on top incomes
-- triggered the depression, and FDR perpetuated it through failed
stimulus packages and higher taxes.

Because President Obama,
and many others in his administration, do not understand American
history, we seem destined to repeat it. President Obama addressed his
historical confusion on a college campus; when a better and more
accurate version of the American past reaches those campuses, we can
raise up a new generation that appreciates the Founders’ dedication
to limited government and individual liberty.

So are you Rosie.  A bit of history ....ok - 3,000 years of it.

I keep this bookmarked. It's from Frontpage magazine, 2004: http://smoothstoneblog.com/who-really-owns-palestine

As a strictly legal matter, the Jews didn’t take Palestine from the Arabs; they took it from the British, who exercised sovereign authority in Palestine under a League of Nations mandate for thirty years prior to Israel’s declaration of independence in 1948. And the British don’t want it back.

  • If you consider the British illegitimate usurpers, fine. In that case, this territory is not Arab land but Turkish land, a province of the Ottoman Empire for hundreds of years until the British wrested it from them during the Great War in 1917. And the Turks don’t want it back.

  • If you look back earlier in history than the Ottoman Turks, who took over Palestine over in 1517, you find it under the sovereignty of the yet another empire not indigenous to Palestine: the Mamluks, who were Turkish and Circassian slave-soldiers headquartered in Egypt. And the Mamluks don’t even exist any more, so they can’t want it back.

So, going back 800 years, there’s no particularly clear chain of title that makes Israel’s title to the land inferior to that of any of the previous owners. Who were, continuing backward:

  • The Mamluks, already mentioned, who in 1250 took Palestine over from:

  • The Ayyubi dynasty, the descendants of Saladin, the Kurdish Muslim leader who in 1187 took Jerusalem and most of Palestine from:

  • The European Christian Crusaders, who in 1099 conquered Palestine from:

  • The Seljuk Turks, who ruled Palestine in the name of:

  • The Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad, which in 750 took over the sovereignty of the entire Near East from:

  • The Umayyad Caliphate of Damascus, which in 661 inherited control of the Islamic lands from:

  • The Arabs of Arabia, who in the first flush of Islamic expansion conquered Palestine in 638 from:

  • The Byzantines, who (nice people—perhaps it should go to them?) didn’t conquer the Levant, but, upon the division of the Roman Empire in 395, inherited Palestine from:

  • The Romans, who in 63 B.C. took it over from:

  • The last Jewish kingdom, which during the Maccabean rebellion from 168 to 140 B.C. won control of the land from:

  • The Hellenistic Greeks, who under Alexander the Great in 333 B.C. conquered the Near East from:

  • The Persian empire, which under Cyrus the Great in 639 B.C. freed Jerusalem and Judah from:

  • The Babylonian empire, which under Nebuchadnezzar in 586 B.C. took Jerusalem and Judah from:

  • The Jews, meaning the people of the Kingdom of Judah, who, in their earlier incarnation as the Israelites, seized the land in the 12th and 13th centuries B.C. from:

  • The Canaanites, who had inhabited the land for thousands of years before they were dispossessed by the Israelites.

And then there's this, from he NYT no less: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/10/science/10jews.html

To some critics of the response effort by BP and the government, instances of news media being kept at bay are just another example of a broader problem of officials’ filtering what images of the spill the public sees.”

Can't talk to my wife about this …. she's a tree hugger who doesn't watch ANY news and has no idea what's going on (ok, that's not fair, she has a limited idea of what's going on) So rather than rant and rave I'll link to a slew of posts that say it better than I can.

Either he's in charge or he isn't. The President has moved swiftly, assuring his critics that he is firmly in command of the situation:

"The American people should know that from the moment this disaster began, the federal government has been in charge of the response effort," Obama told a news conference. He was responding to criticism that his administration had been slow to act and had left BP in charge of plugging the leak.
Obama said many critics failed to realize "this has been our highest priority."

Obama accepted full responsibility and accountability (though not to the point of admitting the response so far has been both underwhelming and ineffective)for cleaning up the mess George Bush BP left behind. But he remains supremely confident that his government's plan: attempting to plug the toxic flow of criticism with a "junk shot" of outraged Presidential doublespeak, sending a crack team of attorneys to the beleaguered Gulf, and blasting the "scandalously close relationship" between oil companies and regulators" will repair the badly damaged Democrat brand in time for the November elections.

SHOCKING: Report: Obama knew from the beginning that oil leak would likely last months. “This makes all those golf outings, sports-team photo ops, and celebrity jams with Paul McCartney over the past six weeks feel extra special, doesn’t it?” Well, he figured it was a marathon, not a sprint, so better to pace himself.

But there’s this: “The real disgrace here is why, if he really did know right away that this was the oil equivalent of an asteroid strike, he didn’t scramble some sort of all-hands-on-deck emergency operation to protect the coastline. Remember, Jindal reportedly requested five million feet of hard boom back on May 2, long after Obama (according to Wolffe) knew about the magnitude of the disaster. By May 24, not even 800,000 feet had arrived. What happened?”

UPDATE: Reader Martha Hearron writes:

I hate to be a cynic, but have you looked at how the affected states have voted? How many of them did Obama carry? Also, at least 3 of the 4 governors are Republicans, although Charlie Crist is questionable.
I bet if it was California it would be all hands on deck from day 1.

Nonsense. If that cynical analysis were correct, we’d have seen Obama ignoring the Nashville flood, Kentucky ice storms, etc.

MORE: Further thoughts from Moe Lane.

I don't even wanna SART with the ass kicking line … bu I must …. "I was down there a month ago, before most of these talking heads were even paying attention to the Gulf.  A month ago, I was meeting with fisherman down there, standing in the rain. . .We talk to these folks because they potentially had the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick."

To review, the President of the United States is patting himself on the back for caring enough about an Old Testament-scale natural disaster to visit the scene eighteen days into it, and for caring about it before those lazy armchair pundits on the TV. (How many fire booms and Coast Guard clippers did Fox News deploy? That's right, zero. Truly the Party of No.) And then he threatens to kick some ass.

All sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I mean, it's not like he said he was "The Decider" or something similarly juvenile. This guy's an adult.

Two month late trip report.
Now Playing: Burn Notice
Topic: Travel

So it's two months late. And depressing. Hey – they can' ALL be uplifting gems, can they?

It started with flight issues. Storms in the great plains made for several issues, bu I GOT here. Late. Checked in to he Fitz – love the new elevators, miss the coffee pots. It was a Thursday night. No crowds. No decent games either. Dropped $150 in 30 minutes @ Fitz. The “trend” seems to be toward disinterested pole dancers.

Friday morning. Finally played at the Fremont. Saw lots of familiar pit critters from the Stardust – nice to know they're still working. Won $150 back. Played the morning tourney at Binions new poker room – bubbled ….dropped 60.

Headed over to the 777 Brewpub at Main Street Station for lunch. Have a new favorite place. The microbrews we good representations of the species and the barbecue chicken pizza hit the spot.

Back to the Fitz to type some notes. Twenty minutes of BJ later I'd broken even. VERY fast dealer. No fun at all when the deck's running cold.

Caught the Deuce to the Strip for my annual stroll. Like the new fare scale. Deboarded at the Riv and strolled to City Center. HATE the fact that “facades” are gone. What's with all of the ugly box building “out front” these days? And when did Frank Mareno move to the IP? Crowd was AWFUL. Not just because there was a big one. Do these people DRIVE like this? As for the City Center: MAJOR disappointment. What were they thinking? Slept on the Deuce coming back. 45 hour trip now 15 hour over …. down $78 – time to go fight the dragon again (or get some twinkies.)

Dropped $100 @ Fitz then dropped $75 more @ Fremont....More poker at Binions for …. then TWINKIES which were actually the high point of the trip and a new regular stop. Dinner over at the Irish pub (LOVE those Irish nachos.) Then dropped another $60 @ binions tourney --- I swear one of their pole dancers was 3-4 months pregnant....no 3-2 bj, all 6-5...cost me 175 to find out.

Flew home the next morning. DID manage to win $5 on a matchplay coupon. Otherwise lots of losses, sightseeing was depressing. Not looking forward to going back. The city I loved is gone. Anybody wanna lift my spirits?

What we consider "fair" changes as we age, a new study finds. Young children like all things to be equal, but older adolescents are more likely to consider merit when it comes to dividing up wealth, the researchers say.

The shift from the "egalitarian" view of fairness to the more merit-based "meritocratic" view occurred largely between fifth and seventh grade, although it continued to change through high school, with seniors placing the most importance on achievement.

This transition likely results both from changes in the brain as it develops, and from exposure to new social experiences as we age, the researchers say.
