Chapter 25

Anya stared in amazement as she watched Daniel and Sofie polish off the last of their roast chicken. Daniel had been reluctant to come but Sofie had put her two pennies worth in and he stood no chance at all. Anyhow he reasoned that it had been a long time since they had a decent hot meal. Anya's mother worked all night at the museum on a Sunday so she always left the roast out for Anya. After rumaging around in the cupboards Anya had found a couple of tins of fruit salad along with a tin of evaporated milk. Sofie's eyes had lit up the room as soon as she saw the food on the table. It made her realise what sort of life they both had led, although she felt sorry for them she didn't pity them for, against all the odds that had been thrown at them, they had emerged from the other side intact and proud.
Sofie looked around the dining room in awe. It had been a long time since she had been in a real warm house. In fact not since they had first run away. Sofie traced her finger along the shiny groove in the table and smiled. Her mother and father had a table like this when they were alive. Sofie missed her mother so much it hurt sometimes. Dan was brilliant, but he wasn't her mum. "You alright Sof?" Daniel was staring at her with a concerned look on his face. "Yeah fine, just enjoying my dinner."
"You sure Sofie?" Anya was smiling at her in that nice way she did. Sofie had liked Anya from the first moment she had met her. You can just tell about some people by their face and she had a very nice face. A smiley one that made her eyes sparkle like fireworks. Anya began to collect the plates to wash up ready for pudding. "Are you full yet Sofie or can you manage some fruit salad and evaporated milk?"
"What really? Yes please." Sofie beamed. "Ive always got room for pudding!"
"Don't we know it!" Daniel laughed. "Your always cleaning me out wanting an ice cream or chocky bar!"
"I like ice cream! And choclate!" Came Sofie's indignant reply. Anya, who was still giggling, took all the plates in the kitchen and placed them in the dishwasher. Taking three bowls from the shelf she opened both of the tins and poured the fruit in the bowl. Her arm went all goose-pimpley as she was suddenly aware of someone watching her. "Daniel! How long have you been there?"
"Not long. Need a hand?" He walked over and picked up a bowl. "Looks lovely!"
"Indeedy. Would you like top quality evaporated milk on your fruit salad sir?" Daniel reached for a spoon, his arm brushing against Anya's ever so slightly, but it was enough to send shivers up both of their spines. Anya glanced up catching Daniels eye before quickly diverting her gaze.
"Yes please. Look I just wanted to say that you didn't have to go to all this trouble and we both want to say thank-you for the meal. We both really apprieciate this."
"That's no trouble but there is one more thing I can do and don't take offence!"
"Okay go for it. What can you do for me?" Daniel flashed Anya a cheeky glance making her blush again.
"You can both have a bath and I'll wash your clothes and give you some more." Laughing Daniel playfully pushed her. "I supose your right. We do both need a bath. Are you sure your mum wont mind?"
"Not at all, She wont be home untill eleven she wont even know." Anya giggled. "Anyway I've got loads of clothes from my dad and Sofie can have some of mine that are too small."
"Well cheers anyway. I owe you one."
"That's what friends are for now lets get this fruit salad in there before it goes all soggy."
