Chapter 12

The disused tube tunnel was bitterly cold, thanks to the wind that screamed through the tunnel, but his thick layers of fat and fur helped keep him warm. In this dug out part of the tunnel, which used to be used by the miners as a resting spot, was the beast's lair. The walls were thick stone with an underground stream running through it. On the opposite side of the stream, lay his pile of trophies. Dinner tonight had been a cow saved from the kill last night. And what a feast that had been. The old woman's brain had tasted nice but he didn't think the man's was very good. He didn't venture from the tunnels very often, only when the supply of rats that had wondered in to his path had depleted. Rats were ok as a snack but they didn't make a fulfilling meal. Flesh was good but brains were his best part. Especially human baby brains.
He had managed to avoid being captured so far by hiding in these tunnels but he knew they were looking for him. He could smell them. He was getting stronger now and he knew it. He would be ready for them when they finally came but for now he knew he had to follow his instincts. They hadn't bargained on him being so clever. His sexual urges were also growing stronger letting him knew the act of mating would not be far away.
He licked his fur, washing the wound he acquired last night, removing bits of bone and lumps of dried blood. He was tired now and lay on his side. Gradually his breathing got shallower and shallower until he was in a land where there were baby brains for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
