Chapter 26

AJ walked down the dark hallway. With every step he took, he heard teh floor creaking and people laughing. he felt something brush past him on his left and turned to see who it was, but saw no one. Just as he was about to turn away to continue his search he heard, "I'll be back."

"Some one must be watching Terminator," he muttered under his breath. But the strange thing was that he cuoldn't hear any other noise but laughter. He looked down on the piece of paper he was holding and looked up at the number on the door that was now in front of him. "I hope she's here." The door opened slightly. "This is not a good sign," he thought.

When it opened wide enough, he saw one of the most precious people in his life lying perfectly still with a littel red stain on her B of A Basketball camp shirt, right where her heart would be. He walked quietly and slowly to the bed, only to lie down next to her. He gently pulled her into his arms and just held her, not knowing what to do. As if it was a suggestion, the girl in his arms tunred to face him and snuggled closer.

"Howie?" Kay asked when she saw him appear in front of her.

"No. My name is Dwaine."

"Okay, whatever suits your mood. Why am I here?" she said as she looked at the peacefulness of the forest seen that laid before her. The opening that they were standing in was full of lush grass and there were a few deers milling around the edge of the forests.

"Well, this is your little place you retreat to when you zone out, isn't it?"

"Yeah, but I never thought I'd be here physically."

"Well, you're dreaming right now. See?" He waved his hands and suddenly she was looking down at 2 sleeping figures.

"Why is he here?" she said as she gestured at AJ.

"You don't want him here?"

"Of course, I do! I just want to know why."

"This man loves you. He was worried about you."

"So why am I here? I'm not dead, am I?"

"No you're not. You're here beacuse I have to tell you something. Well I always did, but you never passed the first level."

"I'm taking a test, right now?"

"Yes."

"Why?"
"Someone cursed you thousands of years ago because you threw a rock farther than he did."

"That shows how easy it is to inflate a male ego."

"The one that cursed you just happened to have a really small one. Anyway, I can clue you in now."

"So what's up?"

"Well, you know you're taking a test. The first was to accept death and you did."

"What's the next test?"

"I don't know."

"What do you mean you don't know?"

"I'm just here to inform."

"Yeah, you sure are a pretty good informer," she said sarcastically.

"Hey who's that good looking guy?" he asked as Howie walked into the scene below them.

"Okay, how can you be here and there at the same time?"

"I'm only a spirit, not a person."

"So what does that mean?"

"If all else fails go to the one who looks like me."
