Chapter 39

Kay was struggling as they chained her wrists and feet to the damp stonewall behind her. “What’s going on?” she demanded of her capturers.

“I’m pretty sure you know,” said Fate as he stepped forward.

“So we do meet again. What am I getting tested on now?”

“If you’re so smart, why don’t you tell me?”

“Well I don’t know.”

“Too bad. And you know the rules. No one can tell you the test.”

“Yeah. Yeah. Get on with it,” he said in a bored voice.

“Are you so confident you are going to pass the test?”

“I’m not sure of the result, but you can be damn sure I’m going to try my best. I’m just tired of talking to you.”

“I can see why the Guardian hates you so.”

With her interest perked, Kay asked, “Who’s the Guardian?”

“Hello, my dear. It’s been years since I’ve seen you,” said the figure that emerged the corner that had been hidden by the shadows. Her eyes widen as she took in a well muscular male body. The reddish tint of his skin complimented the dark hair growth on his head, chin and chest. She also saw the sharp and most definitely deadly nails attached to his hands. All he had been wearing was a loincloth that looked like it was about to fall off at any moment. “Leave us, Fate. I believe we will be needing some privacy.”

“Yes, master.”

Her eyes met his reddish brown eyes. They stared at each other for a minute before he spoke again. “You get prettier every time I see you.” He reached out to caress her cheek.

Kay felt his nails touch her first, and flinched as he tightened his grip, causing the nails to nip her skin. “Who are you?” she asked.

“I’m the Guardian of Hell, don’t you remember? You came to me every single time you failed the test.”

“But I haven’t failed anything yet,” she said defiantly.

He leaned toward her so that he was only a couple inches away. “I know. That is why you are here. You see, I want you to fail.”

“No duh…,” she said smartly. “Who are you truly? I have a feeling that I know you.”

“Do you remember what Dwaine has told you about your curser?”

“You’re him? How’d you become a Guardian?”

“Lucifer himself chose me. I do not know why, but he did.” He snapped his fingers and they were no longer in the dark room, but in a pit. Again, she was chained, this time to a pole. “I have waited very long for you,” he said softly. “Let me tell you of our time together very long ago.”

“You were one of the strongest warriors we had in our clan, despite your gender. We were to be united by mating when the moon was full because the clan believed a strong warrior and a strong woman would make strong babies to lead and protect the future of the clan. We were very much happy together. One day, I accidentally challenged you. Well, you know what happened. I felt that you had unmanned me because you showed more superior strength. Mine was the strongest in the clan, but you! A stupid woman was stronger than me!” he laughed madly, then continued calmly after a moment. “Then you said to me that you did not want to be united with me. You told me that you never did want me, you had only wanted my brother. You said I repulsed you.”

“Are you sure I was at all interested in you? I don’t think I would have ever done something like that,” Kay interrupted.

“SILENCE!” You two left me, deserted me!”

“Then you cursed me. Okay. I get it. Can I ask any questions of my own?”
“NO! You must pay now. Fate!”

Fate appeared again. This time he had a metal bar with cuffs at each end in his hands. He knelt down in front of her and grabbed one ankle. She tried to kick him with her free one, but her foot just went through his image. He easily got both cuffed and disappeared.

“This time you will fail. I want you back!” He snapped his fingers, once again, and his clothes disappeared, and so had hers.
