another first

The baby got his first haircut at Coolcuts for kids. He amazingly sat very still and only whined for about 5 seconds towards the end. I think the fact that they had him watching Veggie tales helped because he stared at the TV the whole time. We normally don't let him watch TV so the newness of it all probably "zombified" him.

After his cut, we felt a little sad because all of a sudden he looked older--and a little more Filipino may I add. Our baby became a little boy in a matter of minutes. We sigh at the fact that he's growing so fast and will never be as young as he was yesterday.

obesity

I'm attending a board review course right now and during one of the sessions the speaker mentioned that in the mid 1980s, 53% of people assessed themselves as overweight. The number has climbed to 67%. In a room of 500 hundred physicians, by my own observation, 50% of us had some central obesity.

healing

The baby has the sniffles and I'm the culprit. This is the 2nd time I have gotten a cold in 6 weeks. I think I'm just over worked and over exposed to sick people. Last time some little kids innoculated me, but this time, I'm fairly sure a geriatric patient gave it to me.

I'm currently sipping on arroz caldo just delivered by my mom. She put extra ginger in it too. This is just another perk of living near my parents.

Two more days and I'm off this rotation. I cover 2 hospitals in this rotation. At first the one private hospital I was working at was the busy one (12 patients) at one time all just for me. By the 10th day, it dwindled to 2 for an average of 4. But suddenly, the other hospital (sub-acute) starting picking up. I have 7 there which wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so complicated.

The sub-acute hospital is basically for rehab and wound care. But these patients have turned out to have so many more problems. One had an MI on top of having bacteremia of (of course) methicillin resistant staph aureus , and 2 have purported aspiration pneumonia status post CVA (strokes).

I get calls at all time of the night . . .every day even when I'm "supposedly" off. Can't wait to graduate. One more hard rotation and I'm outta here.

counting the days

I already got my offer letter. Yeah! The funny thing, for most docs, life is not better after residency except for the salary. Most people still have bad hours especially since they are not protected under the residency 80 hour AVERAGe work week. Our Ob-gyn faculty for family medicine are on call 3 days in a row for deliveries and are extremely tired. They work holidays, weekends, etc.

Not me. I'm working a job that gives me the weekends off and holidays off. I won't be making as much as some other docs, but anything in the 6 figures is good enough for me.
