frenchie's good

the girl who replaced frenchie on american idol sure does have an attitude. I think when the three judges give the singer constructive criticism they should just take it and go. I get annoyed when they start acting like they know it all and give some long speech about how simon doesn't know anything.

There was this one girl who sang today who could probably pass for a baywatch girl. Simon said she sang like someone on a cruise ship that eventually started sinking. She didn't say a word. She's got class.

I'm actually disappointed with the competition this year. They just don't seem to me as good as last year's people, of course, i only started watching the show when they had already picked 9 of the 10 finalist. Most of the good ones are african american i noticed. We'll see.

JOE MILLIONAIRE

I forgot to record joe millionaire, but just found out through the message boards who evan picked. YES, i watched the show and was VERY interested in it. As much as I think the guy is dopey and thought he didn't deserve the "good" girl, I still wanted him to pick her and he did. I'm content to know they each got 500,000.

maui

We got some of our maui pics back. we had to use both our digital and 35mm camera b/c there's a delay with the digital. We had taken some pictures of the humpback whales that nurse in Maui waters from October to March. What a breathtaking sight to see whales breeching (jumping out from the water--like sea world) in the wild! We probably spent half the time there staring at the ocean with our binoculars waiting to see whales.

The thing about maui, compared to oahu, where we went 2 years ago is that is more laid back and everyone is OLD. Maui is to anglo senior citizens as Oahu is to Japanese tourist. I'm serious! Oahu was crowded and faster paced (relatively), people were in style. Maui was full of Hawaiian shirt clad men with tube socks up to their knees.

While I loved being in Hawaii when it's cold on the mainland, I still wished it was hotter. I actually didn't tan too much b/c the weather was about 70s-81 deg and the water was cold. Nights were in the low 60s. Plus, we were whale watching so much, we hardly went swimming.

time shares

my husband and I are time share pros. we attended two sessions to get $260 worth of activities free. We know how to say "no," but also, time share salepersons in hawaii dont' put as much pressure on you as those in other areas. hawaii timeshares are such a good buy they really sell themselves. eventually we'll probably get one there, but for now, we're just taking advantage of the free stuff.

becoming an old couple
at one point, we went on a sunset dinner cruse and had dinner across from some retirees from alaska. we had a nice conversation and then we brought up timeshares. my husband kept on yakking away and soon enough they made an excuse to go upstairs. we laughed because my husband said,:"oh my god, we just scared away that old couple . . .what's become of us!" About an hour later, we saw them about to go to the lower deck where we were, but when they saw us they made a segway to another part of the boat. Man, were we that bad??? we are becoming those talkative weirdos you don't want to get stuck sitting next to on the plane!

coronary care unit

i could not fall asleep on call last saturday. I had the code pager and prayed to God it wouldn't beep. Luckily for me i only got 2 admissions that night in addition to the 4 I got the previous day (we have 48 hour call- short call 7am-5pm, go home ((all patients admitted by the upper level resident during the night are the intern's patients)), then long call for another 24 hours ((sleep at the hospital)). The admissions didn't come to the floor till 1 am and 5 am so I spent 7- midnight answering pages and trying to sleep. That was impossible b/c i felt anxious and I just couldn't sleep that early.

I hate the unit. it's LONELY. On the wards, there are tons of residents around, but when you're on call on the unit, it's just YOU. one intern and one resident, although the resident is from MICU (medical intensive care unit) and not on the same team. The resident stays on the MICU side and you ask him/her questions if needed. I felt so lonely so I occasionally went to the family practice call room to see if my compadres were there. They were stuck admitting people in the ER all night and I never saw them.

bogus admits

whereever you are rotating you become partial to that team. in the er, you want to admit everybody (b/c you're attending tells you to). In CCU, you try to block people from getting admitted. My two admits were chest painers who really had what is called ATYPICAL chest pain--occurs at rest and not cardiac in nature. The ER thought the ECGs (electrocardiograms) showed ischemia and as a very green intern, I am intent to believe them. When I presented the following morning to the cardiology fellow, he of course criticized the ER for making a very bad call. We ended up sending the 2nd admit home in 2 hours. It was a bogus call, as they say. Anyway, I guess it's something to learn from so that I don't look so stupid when i'm down in the ER again next year.

looking stupid

residency training is full of episodes of one trying not to look stupid, but it is inevitable. My one thing is not looking stupid in front of medical students, but I figure, I'm practically an MS 5 (medical student year 5) with the power to write orders and prescriptions. Dangerous really.

The medical students I am working with now are awesome. I don't know what i'd do w/o them b/c they write notes, get XRs and know their rank. I appreciate them immensely. I can't stand the know it all med students though. Anyway,. I'm glad for my med students b/c they also have a good sense of humor and add some livelihood to the team. I NEED THAT in this situation.

boo hoo hoo . . . C C U

So I just came back from Maui and have great things to say, but no time cuz I'm now in CCU. Actually it's much easier than the wards even though you can sometimes admit 15 patients (yourself) in 2 days.
