Personal Decisions: Rikki Lee Travolta Commentary

Open Letter From Rikki Lee Travolta

Personal Decisions

Dear Friends,

I do my best to respond personally to every fan letter I receive. Sometimes it’s not an easy thing to do. I am honored to receive hundreds of letters each month, but the volume isn’t what makes responding hard. I feel if people can take the time to write to me, I can find the time to write to them too.

Not all “fan mail” that celebrities receive is positive, some is outright hostile. I receive letters that attack my racial background, my religious beliefs, and the reputation of my family. I have even received threats against my life and my loved ones. Such linguistic assaults, though, are not what make responding to fan mail hard.

The difficulty in responding to some of the fan mail I receive, is that sometimes I simply don’t know what to say. I recently got a letter from a fan asking me about if she should lose her virginity. Actually, several fans asked that question this month. My commentary this month appears later than usual because I honestly didn’t know how to respond yet realized this was a subject I needed to respond to.

Decisions on virginity, religion, vocation, and even politics are very personal. Every decision we make in life is personal. I can’t tell anyone what to do. I wouldn’t want to tell anyone what to do. Our freedom to choose our own course in life is what makes us individuals.

Like everyone else, I have made countless decisions in my life. A lot of those decisions were probably wrong in retrospect. But, I can’t go back and change any of the things I’ve done, any of the decisions I’ve made. A decision made in an instant lives in eternity in memory.

There is no definitive “right” or “wrong” in life. Make choices you believe in and they are “right.” Take as much time as you need to make those decisions, though. If they are “right” then they’ll probably be “right” down the road too.

Don’t live life in accordance to my values or anyone else’s except your own. I love each and every one of you for who you are as individuals, not because of whether we make the same decisions in life. When a situation is “right” for you, you’ll know – and don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise.

You are my family. I love you all for who you are.

Peace Love Trust
