THX-1138

1970, US, 95 mins, colour. Dir: George Lucas.
Stars: Robert Duvall, Donald Plesence, Maggie McOmie.

An extremely strange affair that would have got a much better score if I could have understood everything that was going on. Still, its well worth watching and you can see how it influenced Lucas' next two films, American Graffiti and Star Wars. This is a very serious 1984-like science-fiction thriller set in a futuristic civilisation. The final escape sequence chased by robot police on motorbikes is exciting stuff.
Trivia: Just after the hologram (?) crashes the car, one of the police (Stormtroopers) says that the he ran over a wookie.

Tremors

1989, US, 96 mins, colour. Dir: Ron Underwood.
Stars:Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Reba McEntire.

A great creature feature which is pretty exciting once it hits its stride. Its monsters are underground worms that are 10 times the size of humans with a taste for blood. It is all set in a remote part of Nevada, which is a perfect setting for the action involved. Things start to look awry right from the beginning when Val (Bacon) and Earl (Ward) finally decide to leave the small town, but are confronted with a state of inexplicable dead people. They find that it is impossible to get out and it is up to the townsfolk (all 14) to work together and defeat the monsters. There is all the aspects of 50's monster movies with a scientist who can't explain what is happening, a pinch of romance and a final showdown between the worms and humans. What makes the film special is the great relationship between Val and Earl, which adds essential humour to the film. A great film, go buy a copy now.
Trivia One of the caravans in the film was bought with two six packs of lager.
