Kelley's Heroes

1970, US, 143 mins, colour. Dir: Brian G Hotton.
Stars: Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Donald Sutherland.

This great war film neatly integrates the humor and the action as a group of American soldiers decide that there's more to World War Two that killing and being killed. They decide to steal 14,000 bars of gold from a bank in occupied France, having to break through the American and German front lines first. There's plenty of action, filmed with the co-operation of the Yugoslav Army, culminating in a head-on battle between four tanks in a small village. Donald Sutherlands 'Oddball' character is hilarious as the crazy tank commander. One line by Telly Savalas sums up the whole movie, "That ain't an army, it's a circus!"
