Carlito's Way

1993, US, 145 mins, colour. Dir: Brian De Palma.
Stars:Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Penelope Ann Miller, Viggo Mortensen, John Leguizamo.

Star Al Pacino and Director Brian De Palma are on familiar, but still enjoyable, ground. The story follows a gangster (Pacino) who is determined to go straight after a long stretch in prison. The odds are stacked well against him, especially when he has his girlfriend to protect as well. The film is predictably violent and depressing but what keeps the film from dropping below par is the excellent acting from Pacino and Sean Penn as the slimy Jewish lawyer mesmerised by the criminal world.

Citizen Kane

1941, US, 119 mins, b/w. Dir: Orson Welles.
Stars: Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Ray Collins, Everett Sloane, Dorothy Comingore..

Still believed by many critics to be the best film ever made. It is brilliantly edited and a hypnotically entertaining jigsaw of a film which is a trailblazing masterpiece that advanced the cinema by light years. Originally ignored by the industry it only received one Academy Award but received rave reviews from the critics. The film may have been a towering technical achievement at the time but modern audiences may not be impresses with the character building, which consumes the story. Not as entertaining as some people claim but still well worth watching.
