Rollerball
1975, US, 129 mins, colour. Dir: Norman Jewison.
Stars: James Cann, John Houseman, Maud Adams, Ralph Richardson.

This film is set in the futuristic society of 2018 when the world is split into large cities which control different aspects of life e.g. Houston is the power (electricity) city. The story follows the greatest rollerball player ever (Cann) as the corporation wants him to retire before rule changes to the game mean he is bound to die. The game is a cross between ice hockey and basketball on roller skates and is extremely violent. As the film moves on, new rules to the game make it more violent, up to the point where they ban substitutions and time out, i.e. the game only finishes when one team is wiped out. The game scenes are great but long boring scenes in between spoil the film.
