The Guns Of Navarone

1961, US/UK, 157 mins, colour. Dir: J Lee Thompson.
Stars:Gregory Peck, David Niven, Anthony Quinn, Anthony Quayle, Stanley Baker

This is a great World War II yarn that pulled the public into the cinema when it was first released. There are fights and some great action scenes as six saboteurs scale massive cliffs in a daring attempt to destroy two enormous German guns. These guns are pointed directly at Allied shipping and are stopping the rescue of 2000 allied troops. All six characters give good performances and David Niven is especially good as a satirical corporal who is an expert with high explosives. A great war film and well worth a look.
Trivia: The scene where the German troops are trying to open the entrance to the gun hanger looks very similar to the on in Return Of The Jedi on the forest moon.

The Great White Hype

1996, US, 90 mins, colour. Dir: Reginald Hudlin.
Stars: Samuel L Jackson, Jeff Goldblum, Jon Lovitz, Corbin Bernsen, Salli Richardson.

A boxing satire with a lively Samuel L Jackson, which is only occasionally amusing. Reverend Sultan (Jackson), a flamboyant promoter tries to revive flagging interest in the noble sport of fisticuffs by luring a white boxer into the all-black heavyweight scene. The funniest part of the film is seeing the heavyweight champ becoming overweight. It is slow paced and ultimately too lightweight to be a knockout.
