Staithes
Staithes day today. We were supposed to leave at 9:00am but coach one
was a bit late for some reason. Still, by 9:15am we were off again. The
weather was sunny (an improvement on yesterday) and VERY windy.
The car park at Staithes was at the top of a steep, short hill. We used
the toilets at the car park as we were planning a long day on the beach.
We arrived at the bottom of the hill to find that the tutors had hot-footed
it down there ahead of us and were settled into a mid-morning snack at
the local hostelry. Clearly, local knowledge proves useful.
We set off across the beach looking at strata and looking out for fossils
underfoot. Great fun. Suddenly the wind whipped up and we were startled
to hear this loud rattling. Hail was coming down and bouncing off our
hard hats. Hail - in July!
