Hard Hats - A fashion Accessory?

We got out of the coach and donned our waterproofs and hard hats. The tutors mostly appeared to have red hard hats whereas the students had yellow ones. Initially ambivalent about the fashion implications of walking around in a yellow hard hat, I quickly became accustomed to it since everyone else was wearing one.

I realized that leaving my overtrousers at home in the belief that it could only possibly shower in the month of July had been a tactical blunder as everyone else donned theirs. Oh well, I would just have to put up with wet knees as the water ran off my waterproof onto my legs.

Some people were wearing shorts. Maybe not such a bad idea as legs dry off quicker than trousers do. Still, I'm not wearing my shorts on a rainy day. When I put my waterproof over the top it looks daft, as if I am not wearing anything underneath. Does this make me a fashion victim?
