Eyes, Inflammations of:

Used, dirty bedding contains excessive ammonia (from urine) that irritates the rabbit's eyes, which in turn become red and swollen. At first only one eye is affected, in a later stage both eyes become infected. The fur around the eyes and on the cheeks becomes wet and matted.
Other causes for irritation or inflammation of the eyes are drafts, cold, dirt, dust, and injuries due to fights.
Correct the cause immediately, and apply ophthalmic ointment, available from your pet store. Even human eye ointments can be used successfully.
Note: Be sure there is no corticosteroid in any eye preparation used for injury to the cornea of the eye. Corticosteroids will increase the likelihood of ulceration and possible rupture of the corneal tissue. When in doubt, consult your veterinarian. Eyes are too precious to justify taking any risks!
