Getting the field ready

I had a date for the game

My wife has come from California to join me for a few weeks while she's on summer break. We'll do the next nine games together. It will be very nice to have her here but I have developed a routine by myself that is not always compatible for both of us together. Before the game, we went to McFadden's and had a drink. Then I showed her around the ballpark and the various people I have met in the previous 37 games. She lost her energy while we were doing my usual couple trips around the ballpark. And it was pretty warm.

When we sat down in our seats way before first pitch and with lots of people still unseen and various levels of the ballpark unexplored, I realized I was trying to cram 37 games of fun into a couple hours before one game, just a little too much for her. At first I was a little perturbed by her unwillingness to follow me around. But something changed my mind.

Bird Poop.

Yes, bird poop.

We had just sat down in our seats and I saw something drop from the overhang above. It landed on the aisle steps next to me. Some hit my pant leg but did not leave a stain. I thought it was a drop of water but when I looked up all I saw was the asshole of a pigeon sitting on a speaker mount above me. I looked at the tail end of this bird who looked willing to repeat the performance and laughed. Here I was with my wonderful wife at a Mets game in New York [My 37th game at Citi Field mind you] and I was getting annoyed by her not following me around the park, nodding approval at all I had gone through for almost half a season. We laughed at the bird and watched it move on. My thought was that this was God's way of telling me not to be a shithead while my wife is here. She is going to nine games in a three week span, definitely more than she has ever gone to before in one year. I've done that in nine days! Twice in a ten day span this year.

I have to remember that what I am doing is unique [ie: Crazy] and something that not many can or would do. My time with Deb here is time I want to enjoy and I can't do that expecting her to follow my lead and like it. We did spend a half day on Long Beach near JFK airport yesterday and it was very enjoyable to me ... and I hate going to the beach! So for my own piece of mind and my wife's well being I've decided to be a little gracious if she does not want to follow my schedule.

Game 38 view

It is a bit of a rough time to be in New York right now as my mom is in the hospital, my 2nd granddaughter is coming into the world in the next few weeks, I received a text from my former co-worker with questions about my former job duties, and I'm dealing with just a general malaise that has settled over me from being away from home for so long. I am having such a great time at the ballpark watching games but it is very wearing on me to put my home life aside for such a long period of time.

Mets win at home again!

Winning cures everything. Leaving the park with a win has happened more than twice as much as I have left with the taste of defeat in my mouth. And with each loss I share it with every other Mets fan in the stadium instead of watching happy fans of other MLB teams headed home content with a victory. Tonight as Deb and I left our seats, we saw the SNY booth and we got a wave from Keith.
