A Young Farmer's Diary
Robert Kuhl
Prologue
In the summer of 2000 I went back to Stearns County to attend my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. In going through old photos and memoirs I came upon this wonderful old diary that belonged to my grandfather Robert Kuhl when he was 15 years old. It records everyday of the year of 1903, from January 7th through September 8th, with the exception of the first page of the diary which may have fallen off from years of turning, the same with March 29 - April 6. It is my theory, that as the "threshing" season was upon them, young Robert got sidetracked from his faithful writing and never picked up the pen again.
Some interesting observations as you read what the everyday life of a young Minnesotan was at the beginning of the 20th Century:
there are no mentions of birthdays
there is no mention of national holidays
the Church was mentioned almost daily
the community was very important facet of day to day life |
See photos of life @ the turn of the 20th Century, farms, farm hands, a milk maid, field work, village orchestra, a wild west show, a turn of the century wedding and more.....
