Richard Wright

Squad Number: 1
Born: 05/11/77
Birthplace: Ipswich
Previous Clubs: Ipswich Town, Arsenal
Transfer Date: 25/07/02
Transfer Fee: £3.5 million rising to £4.5 million on appearances

Richard Wrights arrival on Merseyside brought a sigh of relief to manager and fans alike who had long been awaiting suitable replacement to the legendary Welshman Neville Southall. In Wright, Boss David Moyes hopes he has finally done that.

Wright exploded onto the scene wearing the colours of Ipswich as a youngster, and enjoyed success after success for the Tractor Boys, his debut coming at the tender age of 17. It was in Ipswich's return to the FA Premiership that Wright came into his own, enjoying a remarkable season, and attracting the interest of top managers across Europe.

It was the Arsenal chief, Arsene Wenger, who snapped up the youngster in a deal worth an astonishing £6m for a 'Keeper so young in years, but mature in skill.

Wright won a Championship medal at the Gunners, but decided to leave the champions following a dispute with Wenger after he was left out of the FA Cup Final team despite featuring in every round previous. This disappointment was further compounded by the contract extension of the ageing first choice Goalkeeper, David Seaman. Wright, in search of first team football to resurrect his faltering England career, decided to join the Toffees in July in a cut-price deal of £3.5m (Rising to £4.5m on appearances).

Wright is reknowned for his excellent shot-stopping abilities and his cat-like agility - he shows all the hallmarks of finally being an Everton Goalkeeper that "Big nev" would be proud of!
