Wrexham 0-3 Everton

Young superstar Wayne Rooney joined Everton's history by becoming the club’s youngest ever goalscorer during the comfortable 3-0 Worthington Cup triumph over Wrexham.

The Toffees, so inconsistent in this competition over recent years, showed a few early signs of nerves and lower divison, Wrexham almost took the lead when leading scorer Andy Morrell back-headed the ball into the grateful arms of Richard Wright.

Everton soon settled though and from a teasing centre by Tony Hibbert, Scot Gemmill directed a header against the crossbar after outjumping debutant goalkeeper Paul Whitfield.

On form Kevin Campbell scored The Toffees opener with a finish that was typically clinical on 25 minutes. Li Tie threaded a through pass into his path and Campbell simply lifted the ball over Paul Whitfield and into the net for his 6th goal of the season.

Everton defender Gary Naysmith should have doubled the advantage shortly after when he headed tamely wide from another lovely cross by Hibbert. Wrexham again took the game to Everton at the start of the second period, but to no avail.

Wrexhams best chances on the game was when Darren Ferguson curled a free-kick just over Richard Wright’s crossbar and then the Everton keeper made a terrific save to keep out a ferocious drive from Carlos Edwards. The Dragons came even closer when Liverpool-born Evertonian, Lee Trundle, crashed a 25 yard piledriver against the bar!. (A gravesen like effort)

The next big thing...Wayne Rooney began to take charge from the 82nd minute onwards, First, he was played in by Duncan Ferguson, a fellow 2nd half substitute, before sliding a low shot under Whitfield to become the youngest ever scorer in the fantastic history of Everton Football Club.

Wayne was determined to double his goal tally, Rooney simply skipped past Denis Lawrence and steered his second goal home two minutes from time.

Wrexham didn't know what hit them when Wayne Rooney came on, but im sure they'll remember him for a awfull long time.
