Newcastle 3-3 Everton

This game had all the ingredients of a classic cup tie - and it began well for the Blues when Kevin Campbell powered a easy header past Steve Harper after 10 minutes to give Everton a deserved lead.

Everton were the better tam in the first half, but with only a handfull of chances.

The second half, was a somewhat differant affair, Newcastle piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser, but had to wait until the 76th minute before they reaped the rewards of their hard work, Kieron Dyer took advantage of some sloppy defending to place the ball through the legs of the Everton 'keeper, Richard Wright to level the score.

If this wasn't bad enough, seconds later Bobby Robson's side found themselves 2-1 up; Dyer driving home an unstoppable 25-yard effort, which left Wright stranded.

At this stage, the game looked certain, for a home win for Newcastle, however that was not to be, substitute, and former Newcastle player, Steve Watson slotted the ball past Harper, to level the scoreline after excellent work by Wayne Rooney with six minutes remaining.

Everton started extra-time brightly, but disaster struck, as former Magpie Alessandro Pistone headed the ball into his own net with 9 minutes of extra-time on the clock, but with 21 minutes left on the clock... there was all to play for.

Five minutes into the second period of extra-time Wayne Rooney looked to have given the Blues an equaliser, but Mike Riley pointed to the penalty spot, after he Steve Caldwell, cheatingly... handballed it off the line, from a great shot from Kevin Campbell, as a result, Steve Caldwell was duly dismissed, David Unsworth, as cool as allways had the responsibility of taking the resulting kick - and he made no mistake from the spot.

This crutial equaliser sent the game to penalties, Everton and Richard Wright held their nerve to give the Blues a place in Saturday's Fourth Round Draw.

My Personal Everton MOTM: Richard Wright. Very Hard to pick todays MOTM, as everyone played so well. I decided to pick Richard Wright as he kept his cool and saved two penalties (one wen't over the bar) to determine Everton the victory!.
