Apu gets into trouble with Manjula when she finds out that his eighteen-hour days are not the norm in America, despite his past assertions to the contrary. To show how much he loves her, Apu decides to give Manjula a romantic surprise during the days leading up to Valentine’s Day.

When they learn of Apu’s romantic gestures, the town’s wives become disenchanted with their nonromantic husbands and boyfriends. Homer gathers some Springfield men to help him stop Apu. On Valentine’s Day, they trail Apu to the Springfield Airport. They see Elton John there and, thinking Apu has hired him to serenade Manjula, lock him in a dog carrier.

They discover that Apu has actually made plans to have a pilot skywrite a romantic message. Determined to foil Apu’s plan, Homer leaps onto the biplane as it takes off. Homer gets into a struggle with the pilot, ruining the skywriting. Maude Flanders, Mrs. Wiggum, and Edna Krabappel each think the altered message is for them. The pilot drags Homer, hanging from the plane, through a rose farm, hoping to injure him with the thorns. Homer winds up falling out of the plane and into the Simpsons’ backyard covered with roses. The roses fall at Marge’s feet, and she kisses Homer, convinced he is romantic. Meanwhile, at Apu’s request, Elton John holds a private, Valentine’s Day concert for Apu and Manjula.
