My Vote: In Short: A sweet, light and funny treat.
(coughs) More on that later. This movie, starring Ashley Judd, was originally titled "Animal Husbandry". For those of you who do not know the meaning of this phrase and have a dirty mind, it refers to the control and management of the domestic animal. The marketing people obviously thought the meaning of the title was unclear and changed it to "Someone Like You," a title of a song by The Doors. Hm. Would the title really have made a difference? I really can't say because I didn't watch it when it came out in theatres. I find it kinda pathetic to watch a romantic film alone and that should provide enough insights into my personal life, eh? Anyway, I did attempt to go solo once, watching "Return to Me" (David Duchovny and Minnie Driver) - never again. So, as soon as I found the time to drive to the nearest Blockbuster (that's a different story, once that cannot be repeated for fear of my parents finding out what happened to the car), I rent the movie. Now... Jackman is admittedly hot and the bad boy of the show. Yes, this was the original reason as to why I got the movie - got a problem with that? The other reason (yes, there is another) why I didn't see the movie earlier was this claptrap about the "Old Bull, New Bull" theory. A bull will not mate with a cow he has already been with. Apparently, men act the same way as in, they move on after conquering women and don't return to the same pastures. Of course there are some men who do fit that theory like Eddie, Jackman's character. Eddie finds solace in causal sex and says he's only "embracing" reality - his reality that proclaims soulmates and the idea of relationships are simply bogus. I guess you can already see where the movie's heading, eh? Ashley Judd might be the next Catwoman. This was the thought that kept playing over and over in my mind as I watched the DVD. Michelle Pfeiffer was my favourite Cats so it was hard to contain my bias against Ashley. After watching the movie I can only hope she fares better in action movies. Her performance in this movie can be described as "okay" but it wasn't her fault, mostly. She did try to hard to be as cute as Meg Ryan but it didn't work and never will work. I hope no one else tries to be as cute and Meg Ryan, especially Meg Ryan herself. There are many psychos out there. Another thing I noticed about Ashley was that she constantly looked tired in the movie. So did Greg Kinnear. Wow, talk about pressure. Only Jackman looked relaxed, the lucky bugger. As for Ashley, it's really too bad this movie didn't convince me of her abilities. Oh well perhaps in her next movie.
