go back to The Word June. 30, 2002 issue

We've been thinking lately about the balance between service and prayer. How much should we give to prayer? How much to service? If we kneel long enough, would that sway the heavens and move mountains?

St. Paul says that there should be a balance of both, but without faith in the Lord, our works lack shimmer, lack shine, lack the glory that drives it to God:

Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.

James 2:18b (New American Bible)

Prayer is talking to God. It comes in countless forms used by countless believers through the ages. Prayer lets you hear your own thoughts, and hear God's responses. Only though individual quiet times can God tell you what hopes and dreams He has for you. Only in these rare one-on-ones can God tell you how much He loves you, and how much you have to offer to the world -- that's why He made you in the first place.

Prayer is difficult: It takes time, discipline, several still, undisturbed moments and perhaps a guide or two. It takes practice and patience.

But it is the cornerstone of every faith-filled life. Prayer is often called our lifeline to God. What could be more devastating than a life cut off from its Source?

And... even Jesus had to pray:

Jesus praying When Jesus had said this, he raised his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to all you gave him."

John 17:1-2 (New American Bible)

This quarter we present you with more thoughts on prayer life from YFC of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We give you pictures of a fashion show, honoring, and last year's conference. We take a look at World Youth Day 2002 and a Praisestock by YFC-UIUC. If you're thinking of college, check out some guides and essay samples from other YFCs. And may our usual sections: Ad Infinitum, FreeSpeak, Off-Kilter, Devotions, Say what?, SoundSpace and more sharings show you more of what it means to be a youth for Christ.
